Hey Jim,
I'm trying to answer that myself. I have two Spectrum 45s', one with a decoder and one without. I plan on installing Digitrax decoders in both but I'm still not sure which one. I plan on contacting Digitrax next week to see which decoder (I'm wanting sound also) would work best.

Jim, the standard Bachmann decoder should allow the engine to run fine. If you're having problems with it running smooth and quiet, I'd tear it down and file all the gears to remove any small burrs. Bachmann is known for having imperfect gears and cleaning them up and making sure the driveline is in alignment will work wonders on how well it runs.
