Anybody else have a messy bench?

I will "organize my work area" and it seems like in no time it's a disaster area again. Am I alone in this situation? Maybe we could have a messy bench contest in the WPF or somewhere.

I'm not sure if you could call it messy or not. Let me dig down a bit and find the top of the bench then I'll be able to tell if it is messy or not.

Define "Messy"!

I think "messy" is relative to the space that you have afforded as a work bench, in conjunction with those items and bits of apparel and equipment that seem to just belong there. That to me is NOT "messy" but organised cluttered, as each thing appears to have its purpose.

Oh crap, who am I kidding??????? Yep, mines a disaster area, period! :)

Maybe a better question would be, "is there anybody that DOESN'T have a messy work bench?"

Here is the outward-facing side of mine:

...and the rear view!:p

Mine has a paperweight on it that says "a cluttered desk is a sign of genius"......guess that makes me a SUPER genius!

ken in Maryland...
That's messy? I take a picture of mine...if I could find where my camera is buried! "A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind!" Therefore, I am VERY, VERY well, mentally! ;)

I do clean mine up periodically, and I'm actually very well organized in the sense that I do know where everything is at. But I think it's impossible to be working on RR stuff and not "clutter" the work area. I mean, I COULD put up that brush every single time after I apply a decal, but seems like that's really a lot of wasted effort on a locomotive with 35 decals. And heck, I COULD put those tweezers back in their exact place every time I get a part glued on, but yeah, there we go again. I basically clean things up when the clutter does actually start getting in my way, since it does inevitably creep toward the center and gradually make the workspace smaller. So it's all (at least in my case) a sort of ebb and flow.

I couldn't work if mine wasn't messy. I generally clean mine up once a month, but it doesn't do any good. Within a couple of days, mine is back to where it was. I believe that right now, mine has 3 car kits, 2 decoder installs, and about a 1" layer of tools scattered over it. PLus bottles, jars, cups, hundreds of pieces of wire, all different colors. Several paintbrushes and probably a couple of dozen pieces of brass details for some client's loco's I'm painting.

I would show you mine, but I'm not. Just visualize a nice oak computer desk with a hutch on top. Grab every tool in your micro tool collection, a few brushes, various glues, etc and pile it around the keyboard. Then throw in a few N scale semis, a mini diorama, various bills, probably a glass of tea, and pencils, junk, and various small clutter and you have my "workbench".

It seems that it is the general condition of the hobby. I like the ebb and flow theory. I think that's what I have going on. I counted last night and have 11 projects in some phase or another ON the table. Probably double that in boxes piled around and under the table. I'm glad to have a support group here. Maybe we should have meetings.1388802996240.jpgJust a small part of it

Ohhhh, I have (I think) several of those.
Some should have tools on them, I think.

My train area is one big pile of stuff.

Which one? Last count is five. But I've been doing spring cleaning so I can't take pictures. Where ever that camera got off to. Again.

From my experience the only time my work bench is clean is when no work is getting done or I am beginning a project. Otherwise is an organized mess. By that I mean it may look messy but I know where everything is.

If I am taking a break on a project or searching for needed parts I pack everything into a white box with sealed corners and put it aside. I learned to do that to keep me from losing small parts. My problem is when I have 3, 4 or more sealed white boxes and a clean bench!
