Not good odds on a build gone bad

I like numbers, for example many recent projects have numbers that add up to 21 or 13. Just for fun. Another one that's been on the todo list awhile has been BN 5050, a C30-7. 5050 as in "you'll probably make it". Except when you don't. I'm going to Ohio from Oregon to see the eclipse next...

P2k gear issue. No not that one, completely different

I just measured the side to side my wheels can move, .025"-.030". The gap between the sideframe and bolster bit the bottom clip goes into is .040". Holding the truck upside down, I measured .925" overall width just in front or behind the added on spring hanger, about even with the swivel head...

P2k gear issue. No not that one, completely different

They are the gears in the GP38-2. Still wondering if OP got it figured out yet.

P2k gear issue. No not that one, completely different

I have a Proto loco like this. It looks like the bottom cover was put on before the sideframes were all the way seated. The design looks like a Kato or Genesis or Atlas. The sideframes go on and their mounting pin has a little notch near the end. The bottom cover has legs that fit into the...

    Any tips on cracked gears?

I was just working on an Athearn SD60 that is less than 15 years old and 4 of the 6 gears were cracked. I replaced them all with Athearn replacements. It still runs like an old Athearn though.

The best protection from the floor?

That is way too close, Crandell. In my 30+ years of model railroading, I think I've had one car hit the floor, an Athearn 4740 covered hopper and its end cage got a bit smashed. I glued it back together and touched up the paint, a legit repair scar. Difinitely a fan of raised edges and track...

    Haven't done this for years!

In spite of the few people who want you to model railroad their way, it is a big and variable enough hobby to do it however you want. Personally, I like switching. Cars show up from somewhere, get put into a short train the short train delivers them to local industries and picks up previously...

How do you convert old horn-hook couplers with knuckle couplers?

I’m not familiar with that particular engine but Kadee (the coupler people) has a chart on their website with popular fitments. Nearly every conversion I’ve done I swap in a Kadee #5 (or ‘scale’ knuckle equivalent) and it fits right in. There is also a coupler with integral spring that is even...

    DESPERATE FOR DIGITRAX HELP

Have you noticed how often new users show up with an urgent problem, get lots of answers and disappear, never to be seen or heard from again? I hope our hoopdog isn't one of those.

    DCC Sound vs. grades question

Different manufacturers have different methods to do what you describe. I'm familiar with TCS and ESU decoders. TCS uses BackEMF from the motor to adjust the sound. ESU has a function button that changes the throttle inputs from controlling the speed to controlling the sound. ESU also has a...

    Using a Decoder Buddy

I'm looking at an uninstalled V5. At the ends it has pads for pickups and speakers and along the side pads for motor and KeepAlive. It has a plug opposite the 21 decoder pins with another 24 pads for the functions. I think the idea is the speaker and motor are usually mounted to the frame and...

A "coal dump car" in the 1870s for $280?

Up to the end of the steam era, coal cars were winched up inclines to put coal into coal docks. Some were quite steep, maybe 15% or more. in the late 1800s, Seattle exported lots of coal to San Francisco. Sanborn maps show silos of several hundred ton capacity with a car elevator.

    45" truck trailer

I'm not even a truck driver, just have wanted to be one since I was 4. As far as polyurathane kits, they can be good if they start with a good master and the caster knows what they are doing. Mikey's was not a good kit. Look again at the part that came from my mold, all the grill fins are...

    45" truck trailer

The tandems on the trailer slide to help with weight management. If there is too much weight on the trailer, slide them back, too much on the truck, slide them forward. Tandems, truck or trailer can have 34,000 lbs, steer axle 12,000 for a total of 80,000. Not moving the trailer wheels can...

    Southern pacific ac-11 cab forward

I've always liked the cab aheads but they are far out of my time and place so have never gotten one. I can see why the tender needs mods, that would be a long walk for the fireman to get the coal into the firebox.
