DIO first all you said it was older track but not specifically brass. 1st thing to do is decide if it's brass or not. If it is I would sell it on E Bay or some place and get new newer stuff. Really Brass isn't worth the trouble if you are starting over.

Small screwdrivers help
Jason depending on what run you have they either have 4 small square "loops" that look like steps on the end of a boxcar or they have 4 tabs that have Barbs. I would remove the fuel tank (slips off with a good pull) and the couplers as mentioned already.
