So to start this project of we got to know the base, I started with two Tyco extended vision Cabooses.
I would not recommend using this as a base, awfull to deal with, everything's molded on and lots of cutting is involved.
I proceeded yesterday to cut the roof walk off.
The roof will have all its detail sanded down in favor of building one out of styrene. It will also have to be extended.
Today I decided to rebuild the underframe, which involved cutting another frame up. I've made a rough estimate of about 6 inches for the frame. The body can stay the same other than the Roof and Cupola. Ill rebuild both sometime soon, as I have the styrene.
The idea for this entire project is that I want the model to look as good or similar to Tangents run of them. This is the real life base

I used to see those cabooses every day. Sometimes multiple times depending upon where I was at the time. IC tracks ran into my backyard on a light industrial spur and ran a boxcar or two through there almost every day. Later in the 70s, it was down to about 3 times a week, and now, the tracks don't even exist. The company (Empire Stove Company), Empire Comfort Systems now ships everything by truck.
IC main line tracks were about five blocks from my home growing up and I would see them every day.
Definitely one of the weirder ones, I've never seen caboose like that. I have an old Tyco streamlined cupola caboose and was thinking about making that into Great Northern one, which also was of the more wild designs. I'll be watching your progress with interest.

Yes, I thought about moving the Cupola further forward, I imagine that It would be about the same amount of effort this project is but it may happen if I buy paint for this project and have some left over.

If only, because the roof walks are removable... Maybe you could frankenstein the Athearn and the Tyco together. The Tyco does have the more accurate windows. The Athearn has better truck and coupler hardware.
This one is better than the Blue Box stuff in general, I never had the caboose. I did like the tank cars, though. I still have an unbuilt one, and plan to put it together this year.
