Most of the buildings and structures on the TSE are Walthers Cornerstone kits. They are well designed, look good, and lend themselves to kit bashing and mingling. They don't take 6 months to build and are cost effective. In addition to the Walthers items, we'll probably see some scratch built and a craftsman kit or two.

First set of structure kits are for the *yet-to-be-named* foundry and machine shop industry.

I like Walther's kits because they are railroad-sized industries. What I don't like about them is the totally lousy instructions that come with them. After a few builds, it is easier because you know what to expect and can figure out their shortcomings.

I have had good luck using a rattle can to paint parts like that, adding interest by brush painting different colors over the base color as needed.

Especially those windows. They are very time consuming,(as I am sure you well know)

Weekend update:
Put in a couple more hours on Machine Shop #2. Still need to do some touch-up and a shot of Dullcote. When that dries, I'll pop the roof off put the window glazing in. Barn doors will be open so I may put a basic interior along the trackage inside the doorway.

Haven't decided yet if I'm going to do structure lighting, but when I pre-wire the modules I am going to run bus wiring for lights and other accessories. I'm building all the structures to be removable from the layout and have access to the interiors.

After looking over the Machine Shop #2 building, I found a couple of mistakes I made in fitting some of the windows. I used a canopy-style glue that doesn't eat plastic, so the windows weren't that difficult to unstick. I ended up having to remove the locater pins on the window frames in order for the glazing to fit properly.

A couple more hours at the workbench cleaned up my screw ups; Machine Shop #2 back to the w-i-p shelf until we get the layout far enough along to start placing some structures.

Mid-week Update - Wed 4/30/25
Buildings & Structures…
The Foundry & Machine structures are coming along. After a couple of rounds of re-do on the machine shop, I got started on the foundry building - Walthers Vulcan Manufacturing. The machine shop was basically an out-of-the-box build, but I may do something a little different with this one. Maybe look at reconfiguring the walls and roof, etc. and making it into a larger structure.
