Re Doing A Scene?

I have a scene consisting of two small hills which I know I can do better. The hills are shapes made of plaster cloth covered with various ground cover. I want to remove most or all of the ground cover, cover the existing plaster cloth with a skim coat of plaster and re-do the scene.

I thought about soaking the ground cover with IPA and scraping it off. Is that a good idea? How have those of you who have re-worked scenery gone about it?

What you want to do sounds about as good as anything. That's probably what I would do.

One minor thing, though. If you used a white glue/water mix (such as Elmer's Glue All and water) as a scenic cement, plain old warm tap water would do about a good a job as anything else for softening up the ground cover. But if you originally used a water-soluble sealant and water mix (such as Mod Podge and water) as your scenic cement, then the IPA would most likely give faster results for softening up the ground cover. That's because Elmer's glue is water soluble, even when dry. Mod Podge, and the like, are fairly water resistant when dry.

No, I certainly don't need that much for what I'm doing 😃. Plus I like to support physical hobby stores whenever I can. I'm lucky enough to have two hobby shops somewhat close to me (one is a large store specializing in O scale but has a good HO section too) so I get whatever I can from those places. Bonus, I get my toys the same day, no waiting :p

I totally agree. I wish I had somewhere closer. I guess in reality, Lombard Hobbies would be my closest LHS. At 1-1/2 hours away it rarely pays for me to go there. At $13-$15 for shipping I probably cant drive there much cheaper. Then I have burned close to 4 hours going there. If they ship UPS, I can generally have it the next day.

Having 2 near you would be a luxury!

I used to love to stop into Lombard Hobby, Hiawatha Hobbies and Walthers. Often on the same day! My issue now is Chicago traffic while still not to LA horrible standards suck. So the last 18 months for Lombard is online. Their website is a good one and I guess I no longer need that tactile feel before I buy.

Hiawatha is still is no more than every 6 weeks. Right off the exit of I94 it’s along the way to visiting my wife’s best friend in Racine.

I consider those 3 plus my truly local 4 miles away Madison Hobby Stop my LHS.

I know I am fortunate

No matter though where I buy, either online or in person, I need and only buy off my list. Even online buying it’s too easy to be compulsive and buy
