These are the Great Lakes freighters/ore boats being unloaded by Hulett unloaders. I've always found this video fascinating.

I've seen them from a distance when they were operating and was in awe. It's a genuine injustice that none were preserved, except for a 60 ft. piece of arm with the cab. I'm not certain, but I believe it's in Ashtabula OH.

Holy crap, I never knew there was an operator jammed into the clamshell, talk about claustrophobic!
I didn’t notice any dust masks? I used to get off work on a Friday, blow my nose on a Sunday and still get an n scale coal load. Lol

I was thinking more like Star Wars. If the Hulett's are gone, how do they unload the ore boats? They certainly can't pick the whole boat up and roll them inverted!

By the early 90s the boats were converted to self-unloading conveyor systems which was more efficient than the Huletts.

So how long does it take to unload one of those ore freighters working 24/7?

8 - 10 hours depending on load size and 4 or 5 Huletts.
Now with the self-unloading conveyors 5 - 6 hours.
