Greetings,
I figured my first post should be the intro.
Short intro: I am like many of you where I got back into the hobby after 50 years. I was 10 on my first layout and I only knew Athearn Flywheel.
I inherited a HO layout with flex track and some Athearn stuff about 15 years ago and kept it stored safely in the basement. A promise to never sell the set kept it safe.
Long story Short: After pressure to make a layout in the basement; I had to go up and hang the layout from the rafters. The dimensions are 12 foot 8 inches by 9 foot 4 inches is my single loop with 22" radii curves. Straightway is 36" flextrack sections on wood pieces that are 2 inches wide. Barely wide enough for roadbed foam. The whole setup is 6 foot 4 inches above the floor so I can walk under. Lots of peril.
I forgot to mention I am DC only. I am computer tech for 40 years with plenty of network/firewall experience. Sorry no chance for any more network. It's only me on the setup. I have one of those analog DC Ammeters with the 0 in the center so I can see current flow in FWD and REV.
I've had the layout built and have been running for about 6 months now. I acquired more used Athearn from -eb-. I also bought plenty of spare parts. The roster of diesels is growing.
I just run consists of all sizes up to about 20 cars. I don't really model railroads much but I do appreciate all of your examples. I have tons of static plastic scale planes to finish modeling.
When it comes to locos and rolling stock that I have - I take all of my hypothesis to the track and get answers from the track. It keeps things interesting to say the least.
Also, I got the Steam bug. I started with a 0-6-0 switcher and then ran across a few Pacifics and Mikados. My Mountain just showed up in the mail today. I'm excited to see what happens on them curves and straights.
