Trying to find information about what railroads might have been "common" to see lashed up with early DM&IR locomotives.

I didn't do a lot of digging, but there do seem to be a few times DMIR diesels went "off property." DTI and CNR seem to be two places. There is a photo of a couple of hoods which visited DMIR rails too, the one with the SOO and GN F's coupled together.

You may or may not know too that DMIR Yellowstones articulateds were leased during WWII to at least the D&RGW, I think at the behest of the War Emergency Board. Just in case that might affect your motive pool planning in any way.

I would imagine you also know there is a DM&IR historical society, and they should have some info that might help you too.
