    I would guess regular two-bay gravity hoppers. As you said they'll be heavy so it'll be a small car, and not pneumatic. As a related aside, I know that some mills that produced wood pellets shipped them in large, 4-bay gravity cars, as wood pellets are pretty light.

    Unit trains usually run through as a set - including the buffers. Hazmat in normal trains doesn't used "buffer" cars, they just put another other regular cars that would be in the train anyway in between.

    I imagine that the cooling towers will most likely be on the opposite side of the building from the coal storage bunkers/delivery apparatus anyway. Really what you're going to model is the unloading shed and conveyor(s) and the actual power plant can be backdrop buildings.

    Absolutely no difference. A short is a short and the wiring is really simpler with DCC because you don't have to divide everything into management blocks for multi-train operation.

    That is definitely not how any interlocking signals would be configured. Each signal controls one track, and each track only ever has one signal controlling it at any point. It can fan out into 10 or even 100 tracks beyond the signal and there will only ever be one signal on the entering track...
