Need Information on Properly Wiring My Layout

This is going to be a first “module” for my layout. Want to expand when I get more space. Trying not to cram too much track in the space I have. Trying to leave possibilities for the next space. Thought about 2 smaller flats for the back track and a team track for the front track.

Need Information on Properly Wiring My Layout

Approximately 30 boxcars, 12 tank cars, 8 2 bay covered hoppers, 3 3 bay covered hoppers, 1 4 bay covered hopper, 6 gondolas, 3 coil cars, 1 bulkhead flat car, 5 coal cars, 7 MOW cars, 5 caboose and probably 4 or 5 in various stages of repair or repainting.

Need Information on Properly Wiring My Layout

Now comes the hard part…what industry/industries are there. Thinking one large company on the back track but that’s where the creativity runs out. Anyone with ideas? Tried looking on Google Earth and Google Maps. But nothing strikes me as the ah-ha idea yet.

I reversed your idea. The board the tracks are on will be covered with styrofoam first. Added a small RIP track/engine storage.

Need Information on Properly Wiring My Layout

Let you know when I get things figured out. Hopefully this weekend will be more MRR productive now that the cooler weather settles in.

Need Information on Properly Wiring My Layout

@GuilfordRailman, you’ve given me inspiration with your track plan. Can I borrow it? I model N scale and have 16” by 6’ to work with.

Start building HO scale or switch to N scale in a 3 meter x 2 meter room (9.8 x 6.5 feet)

This debate ran through my head for months when I decided to get back into the hobby. I decided on N due to being able to do more in a smaller space. I’m currently looking at how to make a functioning layout using a dresser that can fold down into a desk.

AUCTION! One put on by a local Auctioneer "Olin's Auctions" , And to those who think that sounds familiar?

He was my closest LHS! Although there was a limited selection for N scale, styrene and other materials were available. Easy to talk with and if he couldn’t fix something, he knew the best person to call. Have to check out his auctions.

    Assistance designing a sawmill area

The buildings don’t have to to be wooden. I worked a saw mill for a summer. The log saw house had cinder block walls with steel plates on them. Overhead was a hoist for changing out blades. The sorting building was metal roof with wooden sides…mostly the first cuts of logs with bark removed...

Anyone remember when adverts made you smile

I want one of those klaxon horns for my personal vehicle. Be louder than the original horn…definitely get people’s attention on the road!

    A Caboose on your trains

It depends on my mood. I run them when I want. I’ve also been known to run a caboose special on occasion. My only stipulation is they’ve got to be center cupola. That’s all I saw growing up.

Has anyone ever used Micro Trains?

The new Micro Trains rolling stock is good in my opinion. Good details, printing that I haven’t seen any errors in. I convert to metal wheels immediately. On occasion I’ve had to adjust trip pins. Good quality for what we pay for them.

Just starting out, should I start with starter set?

When I got back into model railroading, I jumped in without doing any research. Now that I’ve educated myself the hard way about Bachmann…I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. Track is good enough but the switches are not great without tweaking. Do it right from the start and go with Kato for pre made...

    Return to DC

Go with MRC. The Bachmann power packs won’t last long. Please test it before buying it used. If the dealer won’t allow you to test it, it’s probably junk looking for an unsuspecting buyer.

    3’x4’ or 3 11”x 4’ , what would you do?

At least when she takes over the rest of the house, I will have a place to decorate as I want. And she thinks that just locomotives and rolling stock is expensive…😗😗😗

    3’x4’ or 3 11”x 4’ , what would you do?

Don’t worry, I’ve got plans for each bedroom in my apartment…plus how to connect them together. I’ve been looking for a house…where I will have the basement for my trains. SWMBO has already promised that to me. That way she knows where I am and not getting into trouble elsewhere.

    3’x4’ or 3 11”x 4’ , what would you do?

Yes, that’s true. Have to start small so when it ends up in the dumpster, the next one will be bigger and better!

    What coffee do you like?

Had the worst coffee at a Comfort Inn and Suites this morning. Black…and it tasted like severely watered down paper. The stir stick wouldn’t even stand up in it…just float to the top. 😭😭

Just starting out, should I start with starter set?

I started out with a Bachmann starter set. The only thing I have kept from it is the track. Learned how to tweak the turnouts to make them work properly. Power pack replaced by a MRC. The locomotive crapped out. The cheap rolling stock became painting fodder. Run Atlas and Kato locomotives...
