    Passenger car identification help please

While I was in elementary school, we took a class trip from Norwich to Sangerfield on the Susquehanna. I found the locomotive and 2 out of 3 passenger cars. The third one draws a blank for me. It had 2 plush swivel chairs in their own separate compartment. I haven’t found it yet online. Have...

    reducing rolling stocks

I prefer branchline to mainline modeling. I do have 2 Dash 8-40C’s for mainline drop offs and pick ups. But I run Dash 8-40B’s and GP 38’s as primary locomotives. No intermodal or auto racks. I try to keep as close to 60 feet maximum length. I do run a caboose sometimes. Brings me back to...

Best storage container for N scale trains?

I use a Plano 8606 tackle box. The bottom will hold about 50 of the standard jewel cases. The rolling stock and locos that didn’t come with case fit in the trays above. I’ve wrapped them with plain paper towels to keep them from moving around.

    Recreating a defect detector?

YouTube has many different defect detector videos. I’m sure you could find one for the railroad you’re modeling.

    New Layout, Suggestions Needed

Guess this where each railroad has/had it’s own way of building bridges. Not sure on who originally built the bridge. NS maintains it now.

Worse case scenario? Bachmann goes out of business

I started with a Bachmann N scale starter set. The locomotive ran ok but loud. Details weren’t the best. Purchased Atlas and Kato locomotives and they’re so much better. Rolling stock I’ve kept as filler material for yard areas. Currently using the track but have plans to switch to Unitrack once...

    New Layout, Suggestions Needed

My other hobby is magnet fishing so I do spend time around bridges. The measurements I stated above are a rough guess to how big the support pier under a bridge is. Not risking getting a trespassing charge or getting hit by going on a active rail line to get measurements. The one bridge that...

    New Layout, Suggestions Needed

Google Earth is a good resource. Bridges normally aren’t flat in the picture but you get the idea of how big they are. Streetview could also help you as well.

    New Layout, Suggestions Needed

Single or double track? Most of the bridges here were double track but have been reduced to single track or replaced. The closest bridge to me is made of of 3 separate sections. 2 are truss bridges with 1 girder bridge. Each has a support under the bridge end. So it’s a total of 5 supports for...

    Model Railroad questions

My point was to make the track plan simple enough for gameplay. I realize that it may or may not match to the current or past trackage used by a railroad. Hopefully the OP can weigh in on thoughts and ideas.

    Model Railroad questions

Imagining a U shaped along the wall benchwork of about 12” deep. Right U end is Boston. Corner is New Orleans. Center of the U is Cheyenne. Left corner is Promitory Point and left end is Los Angeles. Would need to be creative with scene blocks to create illusion of distance. Deciding on an era...

    The Peanut Railroad (PRR)

Small town on the right to support the industry on the left. Maybe a hill behind town to help hide the train and stretch the “length” of the run. Could also put a small staging track to provide access to the outside world.

Not sure what to call it question

The easiest way to open up the plan to me would be removing the locomotive facility and utility pole area. Then the center would remain open enough for extra people. Add on to ethanol plant area roughly 10 inches. What height would the layout be at?

    New Layout, Suggestions Needed

I second that. Mistakes happen now and then. Let them be aware of what happened and see what they decide. I would want to do what is right especially if I want to make future purchases from them.

    The Peanut Railroad (PRR)

Chris is Charlie Brown. SWMBO is Lucy. The football is letting him have space to run trains.

    New Layout, Suggestions Needed

The second one also has prototypical features. Passing sidings that will challenge your mainline scheduling. Are you planning to do some switching as well or more mainline running?

    Time

You can try 6 hours. Use a scrap piece of plastic or a junk shell. The time I paint by is the way that works for me. Everyone has their own way.

    Time

Another coat, same color…60 minutes Different color…12 hours Ideally you want the same amount of time between each coat and color. 24 hours gives best results. Allowing the enamel to properly harden is the key to a successful painting process.

    Q about caboose lights

The last bay window caboose I was in only had a kerosene lamp by the desk. With the lamp on low, I’m sure you could see enough to get around without tripping over something. Growing up, we had a kerosene lamp. My grandfather knew how to trim the wick so that you could turn down the lamp and have...
