Toning Down Brightness of Static Grass

I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS. Years ago when MRR was building the N scale Clinchfield Project layout Gordie Odegard stated he over sprayed the entire layout with a misting of a flat gray paint to blend everything homogenously and tone down colors.

    WS Barbed wire

Willie, the measurements were in the product description on Amazon. I called the (almost) LHS and they are ordering me two packages. Nice thing about that hobby shop, it's local, there is a good burger at the roadhouse around the corner and the Napa Valley Wine Train mainline is about 100 feet...

    WS Barbed wire

Thank you Willie for the prompt response. One more question. The description states the product is 5 x 5 x .93 inches, in your photo response how many kits did you use for that scene?

    WS Barbed wire

Has anyone here used the HO Scale Woodland Scenics Barbed wire and could provide a review for me? I have a roughly 10' x 10" area I am thinking of making a pasture along the right of way. Thank you.

    Metal Wheel sets......or are they??

I use a wire wheel in a Dremel tool and polish the treads of the metal wheel sets after mounting them in the trucks. One hand operates the Dremel and then use the other hand's thumb as a brake on the opposite wheel. Takes the guess work out and the wheels now look more realistic.

Walthers Oil Loading Platform Modification Help

If you can find one of these Williams Brothers kits, I believe the tanks are better looking than the ones offered by Walthers.

    Trains.com

MRR May 2024 one of the best issues in years! The website difficult to navigate. I went to the track plan database looking for an older (late 70s) plan for Mann's Creek searched and searched using many different key words and then just gave up.

If you were to work for a railroad, which one would it be and what position?

After retiring from the Coast Guard, I spent 12 years as the Chief Mechanical Officer later Superintendent of Maintenance for San Francisco's transit system, aka Muni Railway. Like Dave said the best position is retired.

    HO Single Track Sanding Tower?

That's the way the Light Rail Vehicles were sanded at the transit system I worked at once upon a time. They hated it.

    Is DCC sound really required?

I regularly operate on another layout with sound equipped locomotives. Whistles at crossings, bells approaching stations add a nice element. However some features (which can be turned off) I find distracting to the point of being annoying. Radio calls from the cab, air receivers blowing down...

Athearn and Roundhouse kits: Worth it?

I have a Athean BB shake the box kit my daughter bought and assembled for me. Today's newer cars have plenty of fine almost scale details that are prone to breakage even in the best handling situations. The BB kit, it has held up these past 40 years stir ups and brake wheel still intact. When...

    2-10-2 and vertical easement

Helix help, maybe. Layout Design Journal (LDJ-14) has an informative 14-page section on helix design. Also Rich Kolm's "Trackwork...Doing it Right" a clinic from the 2006 PCR Convention addresses a grades transition approach and departure angles. The former is probably copyrighted, the latter...

    DCC Sound vs. grades question

I have been reading and watching videos on DCC. I have a question regarding engine sound for EMD diesels. When a locomotive is struggling upgrade and moving slowly is there a decoder, or a program to have the sound of the diesel reflect the load?

Thanks for the responses. Grandt Line is now owned by San Juan Models. There are two different types of wood boxcar hardware available.

need ideas locating a part, barn door rollers. Just the rollers.

I am looking for sliding barn door rollers. I located a pack of two from SS Ltd but the shipping ($7.99) is more than the actual part. I was wondering if Walther's sells these doors from their kits separately? I am guessing no; they are probably part of a sprue of several parts but thought...

    Building My First Layout

Found two photos of the helix from last year. This photo has three levels, revolutions of the helix. The main is double tracked on the outside closest to the operator. The inside tracks holding the GN express and the NP reefer are dummy tracks for scenic setting only. Again three levels...
