    Secured a layout space

After moving into the new home, doing most of the upgrades and nest building my DW and I wanted and finally retiring I have begun actually thinking of track planning. This will be my 3rd layout in the past two years, the 1st two were 4x8 and 4x6 for practice of techniques. Kicking around some...

    Board Games

Wore out two Rail Baron games, third one on the shelf. Now we play ticket to ride US and also Rails & Sails. The nice thing about Ticket to ride I can play my children and grandkids on-line even though we are states apart.

    HP and Sackville Railroad

I believe this track plan was an adaptation of MRR 'The Virginian" project 4x8 layout. Byron Henderson drew this up as taking a 4x8 and placing it around the walls. I have been kicking around the idea of building this layout as it offers a few of my givens & druthers. The crossing allows for...

    Layout based on sample photo

My best guess would be 4x6. Look up track planes that were built at "Gateway" shows or conventions, I don't recall which one it was, but they had project layouts every year that were 4x6. These layouts were simple to build, had a theme and interesting operating schemes. On a past layout I...

    Track arrangement New Mexico

On the northside of Interstate 10 just about two miles east of Lordsburg, New Mexico I caught a glimpse of an odd track arrangements. The two sidings on either side of the dual track main were very short. Maybe 200' long and it appeared that there was a concrete pad between the two siding and...

Are larger train layouts less boring?

Large layouts allow trains to go somewhere. Large Layouts need more maintenance. Large layouts sometimes fail to reach a stage where the scenery is completed. Several decades ago, I had a multi-level point to point in half a basement. At least 3/4rds never had scenery it was fun to operate...

    Need Info

KATO track is nice for set radius and configured track. Here is a list of plans that also have bills of materials. Kato Track Plans The Gateway - NMRA website has a variety of small 4' x 6' HO scale layouts. I am not sure their layouts have a bill of materials listed but look through the...

    .

From when I used to model shown on a layout being dismantled for a realtor friend. This is an Athearn GP-7 I started back in the early 1990s. It has a Lenz DCC controller in it but I never finished the detailing of the hand rails and grab irons before boxing up and placing in storage...

    Rerailer

*gulp* 50 years ago I had a tool, it was a ramp that straddled the rails to place N scale cars onto the tracks. Ten years later when I jumped up to HO and included that tool when selling all the N equipment. Now at 64yo I could use a tool to put equipment back on the track. I do use...

The house across the street from my Dad's in San Francisco has a shingle exterior walls. Shingles don't need to be for roofs only.

    Are These Any Good?

Thx Willie. I have an Epson also. There are a few of those buildings would make a good background for my planned layout.

    Sharpen Rail Nippers

While sharpening my pruning shears and scissors saw the rail nippers sitting there on the bench. Gave them a few passes with a flat file. Just curious what others were doing with theirs.

    Walthers Valley Cement

I have the Walthers Valley Cement kit and was wondering what do cement plants use to fire the kiln. Propane? Oil? I would prefer not to use coal. The era and location I model would not be using coal, 1980s in Northern California. I looked at images on the internet and couldn't determine...

    Sharpen Rail Nippers

Does anyone sharpen their rail nippers or is it easier just to go buy a new pair? Just curious what the consensus is.

    Recognize this

That's from a Willims Bros. Storage Tanks kit. The kit is at least 40 years old as it was my 1st HO kit back in the day. The tanks are very nice and by using Tichy walkways, handrails & ladder improves the look. Piping is good but the truck loading platform never appealed to me.

    Track bedway

Two questions: How quiet is it? Does it require any special techniques to paint and ballast the roadbed? Thanks.
