Well at least I appear to be the only Yorkshireman ;)

Cool, thanks very much indeed!
I really appreciate all the help thus far.
It looks like I'll actually end up going with BN for the most part... that green looks stunning and it seems to fit nicely with the time period that I have in my mind.

By the way, can anyone point me towards some good sites for pics of 70's / 80's rolling stock?
Thanks

Thanks...
Yes I recall Bill Bryson that we think of a long journey as the same distance the average American will drive for a decent taco.
A friend of mine in SoCal is always reminding me of that fact (he has not forgiven me for getting locked in the local freight yard last year, taking...

Another 'idiot question'
I know that the B&B and ATSF merged into BNSF...
Would it be feasible within my 70's to 80's window to mix ATSF and B&N loco's and stock on the same layout
Now, again... the pomp of the green and white B&N livery has me by the curlies to the point that UP looks...

Cheers...
My smallest model I work on at present is 1mm to the foot or what we call 6mm scale (being the height of a man... that odd way that wargames peeps gauge their models)
Please have a look in my gallery at conflictincolour.com at the detail I get on a 6mm Sudan War figure...

Or am I better going with N gauge?

Woohooo...
the Good Lady has just agreed to remove her sun bed from the Den...
That gives me an additional 8 linear feet...
Is 40 feet x 2 feet enough for HO?

Many thanks...
But, I believe that given the price of air fares, any redcoat invasion is highly unlikely :D

That's great news...
I had wondered about that, based on the fact that the U.S is a much larger expanse to traverse than the UK, but of course not being a native of said country, I was not certain.
Oddly enough I was reading about leased out loco's earlier today.
Thanks guys, that gives me a...

Yes I've seen Pelle's work.
He's a fair scenic modeler, as you say
I have a couple of 40's and a 38 sitting on my desk as it happens Crandell :)

Thanks, I'll look at that link in a while...
My baseboards are insulating board on an open trestle frame.
It's a horse shoe with one leg longer than the other in principle, and a 2 foot width, so with flex track I can do some interesting stuff.
Basic groundwork is 'meat and veg' to me...

thanks for the warm welcome!
I looked at modeling an earlier period but as I said, I was brought up on NG mags and the pictures and snapshots of America really captured me... And to be honest the colors of the diesels appeal to the part of me obsessed with the pomp of military uniforms :)

Thanks Dave...
that gives me a starting point :)

Hi all...
Excuse my apparent ignorance but as well as being a Limey and therefore at a disadvantage in terms of 'local knowledge' vis U.S outline railways, I come from a wargames modelling background, making my living painting military gaming figures.
