The directions for mounting the Tortoise actually describe an alternate method of using double sided tape and silicone caulk. Sounds a little time intensive and they don't guarantee the long term effectiveness of this method. Sounds like the velcro would be fairly quick and have the added value...

I will switch over to using the .032 wires all the way around. Easier to do it now than having to do it later. Yes, bifocals are a pain when trying to do this kind of thing (take note all you young guys thinking about N scale - someday you'll be our age).
I've already discovered the trick of...

Thanks,
I've been pre-bending the wires according to the directions and then inserting them from below up through the hole in the turnout. Definitely the most challenging part of the process especially if you can't get close enough to the turnout to see what you are doing. Do you find the rods...

Okay gang, I'm in the process of putting in all new Tortoise switch machines and new turnouts. I have a good understanding of the wiring needed (going single DC with DPDT switches and I am wiring the frogs for power) and the installation seems pretty straight forward. I am needing to put in...

"Model Train Stuff" was the next lowest I found price wise. Ever deal with them?
I've worked with Tony's several times - good service and good prices. Had a faulty breaker which they replaced no questions asked. I bought my last decoder from Jim's Model Trains. No problems there either...

Some of you had indicated you were interested to hear the result of my recent shopping experience with Cherry Creek Hobbies.
I placed my order this past Saturday afternoon (the 7th) , it was mailed out on Monday, and I just received it this afternoon (Wed. the 11th).
I purchased a Walthers 90'...

Good day everyone. I need to model some gravel or dirt roads and would like to know if anyone can direct me to some good sites or share techniques that have worked well for them. I'm modeling a mountainous, rural area of the early fifties that would have had few, if any, paved roads.
Thanks in...

Bought the MRC 1663 for my Atlas S2 since it was specifically designed for it. It was easy to install and okay for programming. The one complaint I have is that the sound levels are limited so you're sort of stuck between loud and waaaay too loud.

Just an observation - not on topic. Thirty some years ago when I decided to build my layout, I debated briefly about going HO or N. I decided in favor of HO partially because I already had quite a bit of stuff but the main reason is that I couldn't see myself (not joke intended) trying to model...

Glad to hear others have found this company to be a good one. As I stated in my first post of this thread, I was all ready to place an order with "All Train Stuff" at $255 which was the lowest I'd found until I stumbled upon "Cherry Creek". They came in at $220. A fair difference.
I was also...

Ken,
I dunno... our local club has been know to bust up a bar or two after a long, hard night of switchen' and haulin' freight.

A quick follow up on this thread. I went back to the Cherry Creek site and I added the item to the cart just so I could see the shipping costs. When it appeared in the cart the price came up as $238.99 instead of the $220.99 price I had first seen. I decided to call them to see what the real...

I'd like to second this sentiment. I've been very active at the DCC4EVERYONE forum and was a little hesitant about starting posts on another one but since I joined last week, I have nothing but positive things to say about it and the people who participate.
Thanks to all!

I've pretty much decided to go with the Walthers 90' Built Up turntable since I haven't heard anything bad about them and quite a bit of good.
In shopping around online I came across Cherry Creek Hobbies. Their price for the product was $220 - about $35 cheaper than the closet competitor...

Jim,
I've pretty much heard the same. One modeler on another forum said he'd gotten the kit model to work well for him after much fussing and alterations. I tried going that route and didn't succeed. Bottom line is, you shouldn't have. to. You're right - it looks very nice and would be fine for...

Contacted Walthers
I contacted Walthers about the issues had with their 90' turntable kit (the $40 kit not the $280 Built-Up).
Randy in parts/warrantee said he has NEVER had a customer complaint about this product. I find that a little hard to believe but it may be somewhat true in that most...

Thanks for youy feedback.
Looked into Diamond Scale. Look great but I've read they can be a real pain to put together. Some indicated they are a "Fussy" product. I know that can be a relative term but did you think they were difficult? I'm not afraid of difficult it's just that I'm...

Glad you posted this questions. The Bowser is one I'm still considering.
I have heard nothing but positive things about the 90' Walthers Built Up but part of me wants to boycott them for selling that piece of junk they call their 90' turntable kit.
AAA gets good reviews but is pricey at...

Tortoise Switch machine require power
Wayne,
It's noted in the directions that the machines will run slower and quieter if you reduce the DC supply from 12 volts to a lesser amount. You could experiment to see if the hum diminishes but the switches still operate and remain stalled. My...

tortoise switch machine power
Wayne,
I just purchased a pack of 12 machines (cheaper that way) and the directions show three ways to hook them up. It states that 30 switch machines will draw 15-16 ma. at stall (they work by being at a constant stall position when thrown but use very little...
