Did some work on the benchwork and added the cross connect section. It's about 8' and is 12" wide. I only partially finished it because I'd like to put a pull out section or a lift gate but am not sure how wide an opening to go with and how to wire it for power.

Thanks, I'll look into those other programs and play around with them as well. My biggest concern was with the radius and if I had enough space on the proposed bench. Figured I'd make a virtual benchwork and see what I could put on it. Wound up making a quick 18" radius template and held it...

Ok. The plans lasted a whole hour until I got to the store. Turns out 1x4" wood was almost twice as much as same length 2x4"s so I went with the 2x4s. Definitely heavier and more over built but that's ok. How I was going to arrange the benches changed a little bit but worked out just as...

Hi flyboy,
Thanks! That will work! I just made the frames but haven't put anything on them yet. A project for another day.

Thanks Dave.
Hedding out now to get some lumber. Hopefully the next pictures will be of a constructed open frame. :)

Hi David,
Thanks. I'll shoot you my email.

The rope on the floor is a rough layout of the benchworks. The area in the middle will be open.
Here is the start of our empire:
I have 5 various cars coming in next week from Ebay.

Ok, this is going to be my first build so I thought I'd start a thread and show the progression. Any comments and recommendations are greatly welcomed.
My empire is small so there is not too much I can do. The time era is from 1971-2003 up in New England during Autumn. The train line is the...

Hi Frank,
Is there an easy way of drawing out a benchwork on scarm. After several frustrating hours of playing with it, I can't get a benchwork because lines would cross. I'm trying to draw a lopsided oval with an open middle and benching running along the 3 walls and a run across the center...

Nice build. There is a lot of work in that. I'm looking forward to seeing it grow. :)

Wow! What a great build. It took me a while to read all if it but it was worth it. Learned a lot and am going to use some of that in my little build. :D

Hi stiscni,
Thanks, that's an idea. Didn't think of that. Was just visualizing a big rectangular hole in the middle of the table!!

Hi David,
Thank you for your suggestions. I greatly appreciate it. I was playing with the lay out when I got home tonight. I'm using some rope to trace various layouts on the carpet to see how they look and to see if they work. It appears that my imagination has more room in it to play with...

LOL!! Thanks new guy. I'm still looking onto DCC. There is a lot to lean about them.

Thanks Frank,
I'll check it out. That should be fun to play with and look around.

Hi Rick,
Thanks. I didn't even consider that in my calculations. I think you just saved me some time and $$. :D

Hi flyboy,
Thanks. I was just starting to think that way after seeing your build and D&J railroad's build. I think I can get the best of both worlds. A big oval to run on and if I narrow the bench to 18-36" like others have recommended I can reach and still have room for a yard and scenery...

Hi new guy,
Thanks. Yeah, I'll have to narrow the bench to make it work.

Hi Willie,
Thanks. That's and idea. I was thinking 40" because a 18" radius would take up 36" and I wanted a little more room for things or in case something comes off the track. Don't want it hitting the floor.

Hi otiscnj,
Thanks. I thought about an access hole but wasn't sure how it would look. I'm stuck at 4' on the right side. That's where the door frame starts. After 6' on the left, I hit my desk.
