Steam locomotive and cars derailing at crossing

Hi Andy, Thanks. It looks like it starts to jump up at the beginning of the frog and then comes off the track just after the crossing center. It looks like the plastic base is a little shallower than the ties on the track. I don't have a track gauge yet but will check the distance once it...

Steam locomotive and cars derailing at crossing

Hi Ken, Thanks. That may explain why I hear a lot of clackity clack when the rolling stock moves, the wheels are hitting the ties. I do have code 83 track siliconed down. Never thought there would be an issue with the wheels and track size. I think I'll start by replacing the crossing with...

Steam locomotive and cars derailing at crossing

Hi Greg, Thanks. I've been thinking of swapping out for metal wheels but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm thinking that will help too with some of the wheels getting pinched in the rerailers.

Steam locomotive and cars derailing at crossing

Hi every one. I'm having some problems with my Atlas HO 571 Code 83 track 12.5 degree crossing. Some of my cars (all plastic wheels) will jump the rail or rock side to side pretty bad and the new locomotive I got for Christmas will jump the track or have a wheel or 2 jump the track to some...

Is it common to find stock in different paint schemes?

Hi Kevin, Thanks for the great info. I'll look for the prototype modelers. Don't mind the reading and research, I think that is part of the fun and allure. :D

Is it common to find stock in different paint schemes?

Hi Chris, Thank you for the information and for the link to the picture of the orange gondola, I greatly appreciate it. Almost 4 decades in service? That's amazing. The rail road companies are definitely getting their money's worth out of them.

    B&M Railroad (Ben & Me)

Yea! Found the missing sliding door rail. I'll glue it back on once I get some modeling glue. Suppose I could use CA. Finally got around to pulling up the track and the cork and put down some leveler to make the gate transition/line up better. Used DAP patch and leveler. It was more the...

    B&M Railroad (Ben & Me)

Darn. I was just looking at one of my cars and the door came flying off and landed in the trash can. It looks like the bottom rail that the door slides on came off and I can't find it.

    B&M Railroad (Ben & Me)

Ok, so, I talked with Athearn and was told that my model did not have factory sound installed so it there was a sound decoder, it was installed after it was sold. I called MRC and got some information about the decoder but he could not tell me if the MRC 1620 was for DC or DCC. He said they...

How do you paint trains without airbrush?

Hi Ken and Alan, Thanks, Good view points. The one think I didn't think of was temperature and humidity. I live in the Charleston, SC area and it gets hot and muggy during the summer. I have a garage I can work in and there have been times when the temp gets too high to use the paint per the...

    B&M Railroad (Ben & Me)

Hi Iron Horseman, Thanks for all the good info. I'll start checking the wheels and the flanges and the trucks and see what I find. I did go with code 83 track, and I believe it is a AHM car that is derailing. The car missing a coupler is a Hooker tanker, HOKX 56656. I couldn't find any...

    B&M Railroad (Ben & Me)

Boy am I getting into trouble. I've been buying a bunch of different freight cars off eBay and even ordered some undecorated kits so I can have these 2 cars. I've requested some decals and am waiting on them and I will be starting to gather what I need for an airbrush set up. But I also...

How do you paint trains without airbrush?

Thanks Kevin, I'll start looking for a 40 psi adjustable regulator. I know my compressor has a regulator but I figure it is not as fine tuned. Also start looking for filters as well. I'll start looking at the airbrush names you mentioned and stay away from the eBay brushes. I noticed that...

How do you paint trains without airbrush?

Thanks Alan, I'm going to start looking for the parts. Probably should make a spray booth as well. Have plenty of scrap plywood to make it from.

How do you paint trains without airbrush?

Hi Kevin, Thanks again. :) While I was surfing the internet last night I saw a few folks say you can use any type of compressor to run an airbrush. I have a Bostich 6 gallon pancake compressor in the garage, could I use it instead of the small ones for airbrushing?
