    oztankonlines Loco's

haven't seen much hornby steam, looks great! the couplers aren't too bad unless you look for them. think i've seen the hook and chain scale couplings, but those look like a pain in the rear when you have to couple up a whole train! did you add on those headlights? what else do you have to do to...

    Your greatest MRR disaster

Probably a toss up as to which was the worst. I had bought a second hand GP50 back when i lived at home. It was customized a little with a snow plow, MU hoses, brass horn, and wire grabs.I was going to run it under the christmas tree, but wanted to kinda display it. I had pulled up the carpet in...

    Some new pictures

if i had to take a guess, i'd say those vents are a field modification. they look a little like the roof vents you can get at home depot for your attic. those cars might carry something volatile but not haz-mat, like car batteries or something that can't be super heated. or needs to be vented...

    Some new pictures

the last photo shows an AEI reader. on the sides of every car and locomotive are little gray magnetic tags that, when they pass the reader, give off a specific id number to a computer, which says "car number XXXXXX just passed the reader at this location, it is in the train and moving" usually...

how did you pick a rail line

When i settle on one, i'll let you all know... Most of my stuff is UP (blech) and CNW though. My dad worked as a car knocker in Proviso in the 70's, my mom and aunt grew up around the yard in Bellwood and Melrose Park. Plus i started out on the UP running on the former CNW. When i...

    F40PH ideas?

Wouldn't mind something like this, saw a similiar setup on a rail grinder at Oak Park once http://weblog.pell.portland.or.us/~orc/railroad/Railgrinder.jpg I'd rather have one of those sweet looking Kato units, but i just wanna have some fun with this thing. it's pretty heavy, with a huge...

    F40PH ideas?

Wow, my first new post on here! I have an old Walthers F40PH in Metra colours that i picked up years ago. Thanks to my demonic cats, the entire front pilot has broken off and dissapeared. Still not sure how they managed that! So I'm building a basic replacement out of scrap styrene. Luckily it...

    Signals

That's just the extremely simplified, block signalling system. I didn't bother with stuff like an Advance Approach. And beyond the automated block system (ABS) you have CTC, or Centralised Traffic Control which is used at controlled sidings, interlockings, junctions, and some stations and yards...

    Signals

i'm guessing you are modeling the norfolk southern? if you want to be a real stickler, almost every railroad has it's own use of signals aspects and the NS definetly has some different signalling! as was stated above, the basic idea is similar to traffic lights. green, or "clear" means go, at...

    Do you shake?

i do something similar, or i'll at least extend my pinky finger to the work surface or model to kinda steady or at least synchronise my motions with it. i used to have really steady hands till i hurt my back, now for some reason i'm shaky. sure makes HO scale seem extra small sometimes, those...

Are cabooses - cabeeses- still used?

all the ones i've seen didn't have a caboose or anything, even a shipment of abrams tanks went un-escorted and those things are a couple million apiece! but i've heard of escorted munitions trains with either occupied cabooses or old pasenger cars (not 100% on that one)

found this on youtube not to long ago

yeah, that hasn't really changed much... if everyone took as long as they are supposed to setting or releasing handbrakes, or inspecting a switch before throwing it, or any of the other hundred rules you have to "bend" to move a train, nothing would get done. even into the 70's, the rule book...

Are cabooses - cabeeses- still used?

most of the modern railroads stopped using cabooses in the 80's i believe. you still see a few smaller lines using the on locals and such, like the EJ&E here in the chicagoland area (at least untill recently). the J still used EOT's on the rear though, and i believe the caboose was just used to...
