My first stab at HO table top design… feedback welcome before I do track layout

Good investments are a coupler height gauge, and a wheel width gauge. Out of gauge wheels cause more none-track related derailments than any other single factor.

    Coupler Conundrum

I agree, although I wouldn't go as far as hate. I dislike them, and replace them as soon as possible with Kadee or ProtoMax couplers. And since no one has mentioned ProtoMax, they are Walther's brand metal knuckle coupler. They are such a close clone to Kadee that I cannot tell the difference.

Well, lots to unpack here. First I would recommend getting a wheel gauge and make certain all the wheels are the correct distance apart. That one thing can prevent more derailments than any thing. Are you also using Bachmann EZ-track turnouts, it is good to get a track gauge and see that...

I hate it when I do that....

    Coupler Conundrum

Back in the day, I converted hundreds of cars to Kadee. Back then nothing came with knuckle couplers from the manufactures. So obviously I thought it was worth it. But in your case, it doesn't sound like you are as serious about it, so I would probably not convert a fleet of 15, to match 2...

    A) Freight you like vs freight you don’t like… B) Road names you like vs roads you don’t like…

Interesting. Originally I did not like the Casacade green scheme. But then after they were gone for a while they sure looked good when I saw and oldie running around. And I HATE the BNSF schemes. Orange and Green are a technical eyesore, and orange and black is Halloween. then that...

Christmas Trees, Trains and More - 2025

Even as a small child I wonder why they drew the children with feet the size of Rhode Island.
