    Track soldering

Interesting point. I guess if feeders were attached every 3-4 feet or so, IF a problem ever developed, it would be relatively easy to determine the problem joint and repair it as required. What about "hidden" tracks? Stuff inside tunnels, etc, where a later repair would require ripping out...

    Track soldering

Rookie question, but I didn't find anything with the search function, so here goes: I'm building a shelf layout (HO - 24" X 20') and using DCC. There seems to be two schools of thought on soldering track - one says all rail joiners should be soldered together, with feeders to the buss every...

"Hi, I'd like dirt colored paint......"

LOL! My wife went a little nuts when she came home and found me with the brake rotor from my motorcycle in the oven. If she finds me "cooking" dirt, I'll let you know how it tastes! I am looking just for a base color coat to hide anything that may not get fully covered later on, when I get...

"Hi, I'd like dirt colored paint......"

Yeah, that's about how my conversation at Home Depot started. I need some kind of paint formula for a dirt color base paint. Going in and asking for dirt colored paint just doesn't cut it, evidently. (Funny looks, yes.) Any suggestions?

    Looking for some layout ideas.

You may want to consider modifying something from a layout plan book. I took an Atlas trackplan (15" X 10', shown in black) and widened it to 24", adding on two 5' X 4' "dogbone" ends to accomodate a mainline loop with a passing track (my changes shown in red - roughly :o) It wouldn't fit in...

    Decoder recommendations?

Thanks for the advice! I'll spend some time at the show, pestering the heck out of everyone who has a DCC system on display. They will have some operating layouts, so perhaps I can get some "hands on" time at the controls of various systems.

    Decoder recommendations?

I'm getting ready to do some shopping ($$$) at the upcoming New England Model Train Expo next month. On my list is a Zephyr DCC system for a shelf layout currently under construction. I've already picked up a Bachmann Spectrum GE 44 ton switcher, which is DCC ready (Walthers #160-80035, to be...

4 by 10 layout plan suggestions

UP2CSX, thank you for the suggestion. I did a little research, downloaded the free Atlas layout design software, and modified one of the existing shelf layouts (Southside Connecting) to incorporate a mainline track along the rear of the shelf. That connects to two end sections that loop around...

4 by 10 layout plan suggestions

I guess that would be a possibility. Now I just have to convince the missus that once the layout is completed (does that ever really happen?) it can be moved to the grandson's basement. (By the way, a 4X10 won't fit over there, either!) Perhaps a modular layout around the wall would be the way...

4 by 10 layout plan suggestions

Hello all, My grandson is finally old enough to give me the perfect excuse to build a model RR. (Grandma thinks it's for his benefit - hehe) I had been considering something like the Atlas "Berkshire Valley Route" (layout HO-35) but the 4X12 plan is just large enough to have the missus...
