Will the Fall of the Stock Market Affect Your Modeling?

History shows that the stock market always rebounds after serious drops, but I'm concerned about the effects of the Corona virus on this stock market that's combined with the fall elections. I took a hit last week without having any panic, but markets happen before and I survived. I did postpone my Scale Train purchase only to keep the wife happy. I will have one or two of those locomotives.

Even after going to Walther's last Saturday, I'm planning my next shopping list and do a lot of purchasing on E Bay.

I can start taking it out in September without the additional penalty...but ALL are staying put until I have to take out mandatory withdrawals. The wife and I were talking about how long we should work (she's a couple years older than I am), and while she's not going to make it much past the full SS age, I've already figured I'll have to work until at least 70 (11 more years). And as far as the markets, I increased my put in when the market went down to gain more shares in the 2030 fund I invested in. The fund is already starting to move out of stocks, but hey, more shares cheap is always good.

And no, It will only affect what I buy in that I'm putting more aside and have less in the pocket due to that.

I'll liquidate my Certificate of Deposit this September when it matures, but I'll re-invest it instead of taking the earnings in cash.

Yowzah!

No one can accurately predict the future performance of the stock market, or when there will be an up-turn or down-turn, in its trajectory. That being said, we are a little over a month, since my posting above, and the markets appear to be more stable over the last week, or so. That is not to say the turbulence is totally gone, but the need for panic should be done. If everyone is sensible this will, hopefully, be over sooner rather than later. YMMV, just my thoughts on this situation. Glenn

Yes;
bought one new turnout, and skipped replacing three.
Making a ground throw from a slide switch rather than buying Caboose Industries.
I may never buy another locomotive, sold a couple.

While nothing regarding the stock market as I stated before has changed, my life has changed. My LHS has parking lot delivery to the trunk of the car. Our grocery shopping has become online to the trunk of the car and starting this week because we are over 60 our HyVee groceries will be free delivery! My doctor visit Tuesday was a teleconference. Additionally, my wife and I have rentals and as of today 40% have paid for April rent. This will affect our income but because we are not eating out, traveling, have no mortgages and no movies we will be fine.

My feeling is if you can buy stocks now, we may not have hit bottom but we are close.

I think we are going to lose more then 50% of any type of mom and pops storefronts and eateries, including the LHS. I hope I am wrong but where 3 weeks ago I was nervous, now I am worried. We have not finished the 1st wave of the pandemic and they are already talking of a second wave. Life will recover but it won’t be as we knew it. Mom and dad talked about what they saw during the Great Depression and said save save save. I think when all is said and done we will become a better society, a more subdued society and a society that wants to help others. YMMV

It might not affect your income and so far it hasn't affected mine either but your 401k's are probably taking a beating. Generally they should recover in time.

I have to say, a lot of the discussion during these time is kind of a downer. Here is what Oddball has to day:

Kelly's Heroes...Great flick!

While not slowing down the modeling much, the current status of things now has the wife out until April 20th with full pay, which is nice for a church daycare. We have tightened up a bit as we haven't eaten as much takeout and are buying down as much of the debt we do have (only her Equinox and the house).

I‘m not seeing this discussion as a downer but I am sorry you do. I know you are not picking on anyone and yours is a general statement regarding this discussion. I think it’s great the the Admin have allowed a discussion like this and that there is an absence of politics. Politics can change any discussion. I have not noticed anywhere else here any real mentions of the pandemic. There is no ranting or raving here, just how guys are doing in direct answers to financial subjects. Just don’t turn on your TV, you would think there is nothing else even happening. I hope all is well with you and your family, stay safe and wash your hands!

Probably depends on the person TomO. We, as people, are being bombarded with a great deal of negative news these days, so it's a reasonable notion that it's not hard to feel a bit like more of it can be a downer. That's all I'm saying, and all Oddball is saying too. Lots of anxiety people are reporting and who can blame them. Glad you are not bothered by it all. We can agree to disagree.

As Anne Murray sang back in the 80's, we sure could use a little good news!

Good news would be great that’s for sure. Here‘s some! My HO scale Paper Mill is heading to 90% completion (not 100 because they are never done) about 4 months sooner then I figured. Memorial Day versus the Labor Day hope. Of course spending 1 to 6 pm daily in the train room sure has been helping.

Like I wrote previous I was worried not about the Stock Market that’s just a big legal casino and will come back. I was nervous about the health of family and friends. Now I am nervous because the corner hasn’t been turned, some folks still don’t get it and it has put immense pressure on our healthcare system, it’s staff and 1st responders. Be safe

Maybe...

To give a little perspective to the performance of this market, from my view point, the down-turn in Feb-Mar was a blip. Not only have my investments recovered, but they are flourishing. As I and Brakeman Hal have stated, don't sell your investments when you are experiencing a correction and you'll be fine. A solid investment prior to a correction, is still a solid investment after a correction. Glenn
