Who sells Black Beauty abrasive coal in 5lb bags (or smaller)?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

If anyone is interested in getting some black beauty I have a large bag I purchased and will not use all myself. I would be glad to send off some for a fraction of the cost of a large bag. I would like to recover cost of shipping and such so you know you'll be getting a deal and not stuck with 45# left over when you are done.

Contact me if you have some you want some.

Hi all,

I'm trying to locate an online seller for Black Beauty coal slag granules, normally used for sandblasting - but I want to use it for HO scale 'live coal' loads. I originally bought it from a company named Abrasives Depot, but I don't think they exist anymore - when I click their link, all I get is a business search engine.

I've tried Google and a few other search engines, and I always get flooded with hits for spec sheets, application sheets, and bulk brokerages - not to mention links that actually have nothing to do with Black Beauty.

I need to know: Where do you buy yours from - in 5lb (or smaller) containers?

Go to: www.findblackbeauty.com. You can locate BLACK BEAUTY abrasives by street address, city, state or zip code. You may also call customer service toll-free at 1-888-733-3646. Visit www.blackbeautyabrasives.com for more information.

This may be a dumb question... but wouldn't activated carbon for aquariums work on this? And is the weight not a problem?

Since I've never had any pet fish, that thought never even crossed my mind! Thanks for the idea, I'll look into it...

As for the weight: Yes it's a bit heavy, but my locos have always been able to handle 20-car trains of it; also adds an element of challenge for my guest operators.:D

I can also offer you a sample pack (free of charge, of course) that showcases all 3 gradations - medium, fine & xfine. If you are interested, you may send an email to inquiries-m@harsco.com with your mailing address. Additionally, Harsco also makes a high quality crushed glass product. I can also send you a sample of this material as well. www.blackbeautyabrasives.com

I've mentioned before, I use crushed walnut shells dyed black with Rit dye. It is the least dense option I could find since loaded cars, even with the shells, are well over twice the recommended weight. Shells are also non-magnetic. I got a box of 25lbs at Harbor Freight and it is the finer of the two grades they had.

I think the numbers refer to the sieve sizes, the grit you buy will be between those numbers. Of course, they are sort of irrelevant to someone not in the sieving business. Fortunately we have google:

Just an FYI, this is the stuff we are looking for. Of course, the smallest bag (50 pounds) is enough to keep our model train coal hoppers loaded, as well as those of all our friends and fellow model railroad club members.
It's too bad we don't all live closer together, we could buy a bag and divvy it up.
