They don't actually have whistles or horns, but an electronic decoder with all of the sounds preprogrammed in. They are attached to speakers within the model or tender.
OK, then are there any seperate devices that will produce the sound that is available. I see there is an HO station that can be had but the scale doesn't exactly fit the large gage.
There are several devices for sound. There's several power pack looking units that produce sound to mounted speakers to the layout or to a live stock car that had a built in speaker and was powered and fed thru the rails. This was pulled by one train. Has station "All Aboard!" and circus sounds.
There is another unit that has 2 speakers with a push pad. But the sounds don't match well..
I have all above and they are in a box because they don't compare to onboard sound.
Its hard to imagine when a whistle is one side of the layout when your train is on the other.
Bud, is your train G scale Bachmann? Is it inside? One of your options is the MRC Symphony 77. There's a description of it at http://www.modelrectifier.com/search/product-view.asp?ID=7614. It can be had on-line ofr as lit as $50. The two speakers help to spread the sound some so it isn't all coming from one place. Not as nice as having a decoder with sound in the engine but I've heard one in action and it sounded pretty good, especially for large scale trains.
