Im wondering what you guys think I should do here.... Opinions are welcome so please chime in
I need 3 BNSF Warebonnet GP60M's. I already have a Santa Fe Warbonnet GP60M and i only need one of those. But I need 3 BNSF Warbonnet GP60M's for my La Mirada Modules. Athearn made them, but they are long sold out in the BNSF Warbonnet (2004). Trainworld has the BNSF Warbonnet GP60M's still and i think im going to buy them. But they are from the 2004 release, which is a few years old. They also have the Santa Fe Warbonnets which are from the newer 2009 release Athearn ran.
2) Get 3 of the newer 2009 release of the GP60M's with the Santa Fe Lettering on the sides of the locomotives and then remove the Santa Fe Lettering on all 3 and replace with BNSF lettering, as well as re-number all 3 units. Here is the locomotive: http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATH88801
Either way, im going to have to re-number the 3, i understand that. But is it worth it to buy the newer run models? Are they any different? I compared both on the Athearn site and didnt see any differences, but do they have the same motor in them or is the 2009 release a better more modern motor? I want these to run well and if their different motors in the older run models then I will go with the 2009 release models and do the extra work.
Thanks in advance for your opinions on my little situation here LOL
Good catch Matt! I hadnt noticed that, but I just checked my prototype photos and all of the Warbonnet Units have the black nose hoods, so even my Santa Fe Warbonnet I already have will have to be painted to match as it has a red nose hood. I figure if I already have to do it to one of them, doing 3 more shouldnt be too much different lol

It had nothing to do w/ different Athearn runs. Athearn reproduced the different Santa Fe experimentation w/ anti glare colors on their GP60M nose tops. Here's a discussion of that found thru QStation: http://www.qstation.org/atsf/antiglare.html
If you dont want to repaint them you could only add a black decal. I would go with the newest run. athearn old drive mechanism is somewhat flaky (plastic drive shaft !)
Julien, so should I go with the newer 2009 run models and remove the "Santa Fe" lettering and replace with BNSF Lettering then? Like I said, I want them to have the most current motors in them, I just wasnt sure if Athearn had changed the motors from the 2004 run to the latest 2009 run of the GP60M's?
BTW, a repaint wont be required on anything no matter what year model I go with, all I would have to do at the most is remove some lettering
Cajon- I get it, makes sense, like the eye black that goes on your cheeks during sports. Still pretty ugly if you ask me. Tinted windows would luck much better

yes tinted windows would look better but would cut down on visibility at night. If you look most railroads have or had at some point an anti glare paint on the tops of noses. not sure about now but UP's was green but looks to be gray on the sd70ACes. I believe basically its just a coat of flat paint instead of gloss but may be wrong.
from what I can tell is that both rus are the same so it shouldnt matter. I have 3 units from the latest run and they still have the same motor and Hex Flywheels / Drive Shafts.
What difference does it make what the Athearn #s are. The GP60Ms get rotated out every 90 days for routine maintenance, so the Athearn #s will show up eventually.

It makes no difference to me, I'm just basing that off of what I have read in his threads on his Layout and railfaining the area he is modeling. Perhaps it makes a difference to Josh though

Should have put Josh's name in the beginning as my comments were directed to him not you Cory. Josh doesn't really need to go thru the time & trouble to re # the Athearns to what he saw the last time he visited La Mirada because the next time he goes back there will be different #s. And who knows what kind of engines will be if the economy keeps improving. BuNSniFf is getting some gensets as we speak.
