Wheeling and Lake Erie

Just an FYI... A few months ago there was a nice article on them in Trains magazine... If I can find the issue I will let you know which one it was. I'm sure it would be nice to see if your modeling them!

I have the Trains article you have mentioned. Great article about a nice railroad. I live in Medina, Ohio which the Wheeling and Lake Erie passes thru. They service local industries, a lot of plastic, roofing shingles and gravel for concrete manufacture, plus others. A lot of hoppers, covered hoppers and tank cars. Very few box cars. The W&LE has a good sized yard in Akron. Nice Rio-Grande like paint scheme.
Thanks
Wayne

I was fooled by that Rio Grande-like scheme the first time I saw it - it is gorgeous though! Are they the same W&LE as before they got swallowed into a merger [can't quite remember which one...] - or are they smaller?

It has caught my attention while doing my research. I was looking to pick up a switcher and thought I might try my hand at modeling a real one. Problem is, the two types I found that they use I cannot find in N or HO. One of the types is the SW1500.

The fact that they run some Rio Grande engines themselves was why I started the research. I found the Akron Britain Yard in Google maps, but I could not locate the turntable someone mentioned on a site. But I was interrupted, so did not have time to trace all the tracks.

Ken, the modern W&LE has some of the same lines as it's earlier predecessor, which was leased to and then ultimately merged into Nickel Plate, which merged with the N&W, and the remmnants are now part of the NS. The NS wanted spin off most of the old W&LE trackagem which was not in good shape and unprofitable. The modern W&LE, through a combination of good management, trackage rights, and general revival in the Rust Belt, has become a profitable regional railroad.

In my travels in Northern Ohio I can see the W&LE as far north as the Sandusky quarries. Lots of gravel. The paint jobs are varied. Check this site for a Loco roster and pictures. It supposedly covers there current motive power. They also run some old demonstrators.

Thanks

I think you meant to link this site...

That is were I found what switchers they run. I am looking at their line to see if an area inspires me. Since I am in Ohio, I will travel to see some of the line in the spring.
