We stay at the wife's mom's out in Yorkville, or out in the sticks as I call it. The show was a lot of fun. Being on the other side of the table is more fun I think.
I found it fun for a number of years. I have done commissioned work for others, resulting in most of my best work going to somebody else's house :) I also sold airbrushes and painting equipment and did clinics for Iwata. Ultimately I found that an old warning I was given was true, at least for me. The best way to ruin a perfectly good hobby was to turn it into a business. Enjoy doing shows! It is good fun.

Well we have been at it for over 5 years now. I got bored with building my dream layout. You remember all of the switchers I built back in the day? Well I built a 6' X 20' layout. All 1 industry, JTEX. Jerry's Truck and Electric. My switcher junkyard, salvager, rebuilder. All 200 switchers fit on it.

But I found out that I enjoy building rather than running trains. Go figure!

It's good catching up with you. You and Rico are the only ones that checked in with me since I came back here. Kinda a different place anymore.

Yeah, people come and people go. we did shows for like ten years, but once I changed jobs and much travel was required, they became a problem. Plus by that time I had had enough. The combination clinic and sales program was brutal. We had good sales but were exhausted after every one. Did you sell off those switchers? That seems a natural fit.

I retired back in May at 62, so my time is mine again. Our season just started last month, 3 shows done got 5 more to go through May, then a couple more in the fall. we are always looking for more to go to.

I still have the majority of my switchers, but have recently started selling them off. It's kind of surprising what I can get for a fully detailed Athearn BB these days.

We were in Chicago yesterday, got an old hobby store there, found a nice haul of Bev-Bel BB kits. So those are all packed away in the truck. Headed back to NC tomorrow.

Look into the Mad City show in Madison, Wi. One of the show organizers is a OPS session buddy and he says vendors tell him it’s a great show, It is in February. Another show is in Monroe, Wi. In September. My hobby shop guy says things really sell there and he brings his consignment stuff there. I sold my weathering there through him for 4 seasons and did ok, I’d have to check the records but like 10 sales each day trying to remember. It’s the 1st good sized show of the season in Wisconsin. I hear the upcoming show in Grren Bay is always a good vendor show.

I Looked at the records, at the Monroe show in 2021 sold 32 weathered freight cars, no diesels. The 2022 show sold 15 weathered freight cars and 3 diesels. The 2023 show was 20 weathered freight cars and 4 diesels. I missed the 2024 show because of health but he was able to sell 2 of the 10 weathered diesels I gave him. I had no freight cars to give him due to health. I skipped 2025 due to re-learning weathering skills. My weathered freight cars sell from $40 to $75 and diesels start at $260. I’d go setup Friday evening with him and come back Sunday at noon to help take down at 4pm. It’s in a hockey rink and gets busy depending upon Weather and what time the Packers play. Monroe is close to the Illinois line.

But, we live in NC. We come up here maybe twice a year to visit family and holidays. It's an 850 mile trip, to Wisconsin add another 100 miles, I would be almost 1000 miles.

We can justify the Wheaton show, because it's 11 months of the year on the first Sunday. We can plan or trips around that.

The reason I was so happy with this show, we sold 36 weathered and NASA cars in 6 hours. We range from $35 - $110 depending on the car type and load on it.

After I wrote that I realized you lived in NC. But if you can do a Wheaton show, what’s another 100 miles. I’ll buy lunch if you come up and we could meet Alan at his super wonderful club in Milwaukee area if he’s agreeable

That sounds like something we can make happen i think the better half is planning the next trip in June or July.

OK folks, vacation is over, time to get back to production. The first 3 shows we have done this year have really hit our caboose inventory. So over the next 2 months I'll be kicking out a couple dozen cabooses.

First up, a Great Northern wide vision.

Walthers had a sale on boom and drill trucks. These make great flat car loads so I stocked up for the year.

More to come.....

I spent 8 hours in the paint shop today. I still need to spray rust, flat and gloss tomorrow. 27 cabooses in the works.

Well we drove up to Illinois to visit family and worked 2 tables at The Great Midwestern Train Show in Wheaton Illinois today. We had a great show. The people up here really appreciated what we do, it was a one day/6 hour show so it went by fast.

My wife then took me out for a birthday dinner. Had a great steak dinner. So all in all, it was a great day!!!

Oh wow... I was thinking to go to that one... Dang ..

Any chance you planning on being there April 12th? I'd love to pick up more of your models.
