I think you are right. It was in the 1950's that Globe Models somehow became the Athearn blue box series. I think before then Athearn kits were the stick and metal type.

HO/OO was introduced commercially before the 2nd World War and gained popularity pretty quickly afterward. Diecast was the common Locomotive material at first, pressed and printed tin plate for rolling stock. The 60's being when plastic took over, the transition in the 50's.
 
I assume you are asking what was most popular in the 1950s and I would go with Lionel O-27 as likely the most popular. American Flyer S-Scale might be next and HO coming up very quickly to supplant O-27 as the most popular.
 
I agree with the above post. Everyone I knew in the 40s & 50s had O-27 gauge trains, except for my one friend who ended up with 2 American Flyer trains. With just 2 tracks and those whitewall wheels, he made us all envious. But I ended up going from my Lionel O-27 to HO in the middle 50s.
