Whats going on this weekend guys? I've gotta work, but I hope to get time Saturday morning to post, and hit up a rummage sale with trains.

Ive had a productive week here at RJR. Ive finished the basic structure of the bridge then started the process of adding colour. So far Ive just sprayed it with primer, I did it in bands to try and capture the strata effect of the concrete pouring, it just looks patchy its also too grey I think.

Then I thought what can i do with the left over tiles from the shed ceiling ????

Got a bit carried away... then found a big tub of ready mixed dry wall filler ;D

Might as well place a few other details on while the camera is out ..

The bridge needs to be lighter and the rocks need to be greyer ??

Sorry for the poorly lit, out of focus pictures. My camera has zero manual functions. Most of the problems are of my own doing though. Here are a couple of progress shots.

The beginnings of a town and my rollar coaster decline.

Hello John,

I follow your steps of making your "shed layout" from the beginning, and its is very very impressive ! What you can do with such a "small"( not) space...How you designed it in a short time and the many fine progress you made/make.. etc..chapeau!!( hat?)
The bridge needs to be lighter and the rocks need to be greyer ??
if it is a "concrete" bridge...may be a little bit darker/more dirty ocre/grey..
the rocks: that depends: what kind of rock you want to immitate/modelling..

Jos

ps: hope to post some pics of the pimped Ntrackmodules of our club this weekend...finaly =)

John IMHO I think the structure is great, and everything around it is looking good, But as you paint your bridge do everything in one uniform color so that the white styrene does not show threw then dry brush in grey patches if you want, but a new structure like what you have would show very little damage.Personally speaking I think the color is perfect.
Great work everyone.

Great inspiration guys!

Jeffrey: Excellent lighting in that shot! Looks like late afternoon.

Yeah, probably right, but I'm no expert. I just know it's hard to get an accurate representation of concrete. At least for me.:)
And rocks can be all sorts of colors.

John, that's a very neat looking bridge. Concrete tends to be pretty uniform in color with weather showing up in spots like the bottom of the arches. I think you're asking about how to get the effect of lift lines. A structure that big would usually be poured in 20 foot lifts. First, repaint the whole bridge in a light grey color that most closely represents concrete on your side of the pond - the color varies depending on the aggregate mix. Next, get some 1/8" artist crepe tape and wrap the concrete columns about each scale 20'. Then do all the weathering, which would consist of some darker areas at the bottom of the each arch and the tops of the bridge along that raised area. You can use chalks to do an overall weathering of soot or smoke depending on what era this bridge is supposed to represent. When you're done, peel off the tape and you'll have perfect lift lines.

Corey,
I really like those buildings and the ballast job looks great. That grade needs to be reworked before you get any further though. It is going to be a constant operational problem for you. That grade looks to be near 10%, which is getting near the limits of steel on steel adhesion. Is there a way you can extend that grade further to right? Even a few feet would really help.

Man, great weekend already! Darn me & having to work.

Here's the fun of my weekend... USAF F117.

There are two seperate grades. The one that the train is on is for going down only. There is another grade right behind it that goes up to the second level. My little Bachmann can pull about ten cars up with a little extra juice. Since my layout is so small, I have eighteen inch curves and small trains. My old athearn BB can pull a dozen or so cars. I usually keep the trains to five or six cars. Thanks for the compliments on the scenery. As you can see, I have a long way to go.

Nice start gents,
John i used polyfilla on my foam bridge abutments, i painted it on then sanded it down, looked very good, but this won't work on styrene. you can buy concrete colour paint at most decent model shops,,, tell you what, it's blackburn model show next weekend (sat and sun) you'll be able to get some there no problem

Hey, hey, hey! Some great work already showing up here. About all I have to contribute is some more work on the caboose interior I am scratch building. I have added the capola lofts complete with an ice box on what will be the kitchen side and a storage cabinet on the other one, added the conductors desk, a table for the crew to have lunch, and kerosene lamps. I am still waiting on some detail parts to arrive from Walthers Out Of Stock to complete the kitchen and the toilet areas. Anyone out there have any suggestions on how to build a chemical stove for the kitchen out of scraps?

Love it Ray , I love doing details like that myself, unless you show someone no one ever knows , but if your like me , I know I did it and I'm proud of myself. Keep up the good work , can't wait to see it finished.

Corey, as long as that grade is down only I guess it'll work but you'll learn the meaning of slack action if you get much more than 10 cars behind that engine. :) I think getting that hillside landscaped with some thees and bushes will help to hide the steepness of the grade from the viewer.

Ray, I've never done a caboose interior but I've always wanted to. Very nice work so far, especially getting everything in square without big globs of glue, which is how I'd end up doing it. :o Are you planning on lighting the interior? I'll bet it will look great in a night shot.

Josh, I'd love to spend the weekend with those F-117's. That Harrier's not bad either. How many of the F-117's do we still have flying? It seems to me we only built 25 or something like that.

Here are few of mine. This is the P&N 70 tonner pulling an empty carbon black car from Flint Paints. This requires street running through downtown and Spike is out on the steps making sure they clear the little old lady in the Gremlin:

The 70 tonner is now back in the yard pulling a cut of stock cars to the interchange track. The view is over the P&N engine house. You can see that good housekeeping is not a trait of the P&N:

Hillside got an new ambulance. It's one of those Dodge Sprinters, which is not the greatest vehicle for an ambulance but it'll do for a small town. I stripped most of the lettering and added decals and extra lights:

The Hillside brush truck got a complete refurbishing including new paint, new lettering, some hard suction hoses on the side and a new canvas hose bed cover. She looks good for being a 15 year old surplus truck:
