Weathering UP's ratty looking locos

That peeling paint effect is caused by the cleening solution they use after it's been on helper duty. They come out BLACK, and they used a mixture of simple green from what I've heard. As for replicating it, Mellow Mike made a great looking Fmr C&O/Chessie hopper where the yellow peeled to reveal primer. hopefully he logs on, but if not, send him an email through the members section, or check out:

I've had a suggestion of cutting pieces of tape and placing them in various spots, then placing the shell in the sun or under a UV light, to fade the paint. This should allow for darker patches once the tape is removed. That seems like a lot of work, not to mention trying to cut every piece a different shape.

Do the same thing, but instead of leaving it in the light (it'll take time), just use a very thin white wash to faid the rest.

Another way to mask the areas you want to be unmodified is to paint globs of rubber cement on the model before drybrushing. It's very easy to remove when the paint is dry. You simply rub it off and roll it into a ball, using it to pick itself off the model surface.
