Weathering Rolling Stock, a Continous thread

I have thought of getting tables this year at swap meets within Wisconsin. When I asked an organizer of a new one outside of Milwaukee he said at his latest show the weathering table that was there sold just enough to pay for the table and drive over. He is an owner of one of my pieces and said depending on my pricing I should try it. The guy there was mostly selling at 100 and up, that’s not my stuff…

Still thinking
Tables around go for $35-55 each so it's not hard to sell a few thing to break even.

Looks like a bit more orange on the trucks is needed

I am calling NATX 25000 gallon tank car 95% done. The final mat finish clear coat is what is left and I will complete that along with it’s 2 sisters that are due in the mail today. Still time to make adjustments.

The wheelsets and trucks after the mat clear will have a more muted tone then the following 2 pictures:

Next up. I am going back to the 3 DNAX green 25000 gallon tank cars.

While that is being done I also will be tagging TOBX 889034. This is a duplicate number to the one I currently have for sale in the Sale Forum here and on Facebook.

Finally while multi-tasking I will be laying out my 1st official car that I will be adding graffiti to. Pencil markings for what I will be drawing is first up. UP #111029 ARMN refrigerator car of which I have 4 of this number amongst all the Exactrail, BLMA and Atlas cars I have.

Finally, the 4 wet/dry grain bins and conveyor system are out for a reason. They maybe getting been sold to a modeler who saw them on the layout last year during an open house session. I have seen these before Covid for sale built up at a couple shows for $40 each by a “real” professional modeler. I think mine are just as good but in todays inflation I have no idea what to sell all 4 together for. Maybe $200.

I agree, that looks awesome, you have as always done, a first class job, I definitely can't fault that, can't wait to see how the sister wagons will turn out like.

Those grain bins are Walthers (?), so to buy unmade, plus the conveyer is $127.55 add in postage, putting them together, painting, detailing etc.

I reckon $250 minimum (and I consider that an absolute steal)

Very nice cars, I like them, but I like them as they are, maybe some dullcoat, but for me that would be enough.

Thanks Chris. Appreciate the good words.

The ARMN refrigerator cars new in 2005 for 1/2 my fleet and the other half in 2013 got hit with graffiti very quickly. Almost straight from the factory it seems. Depending on the year of the pictures I have and what side of the car, they do get graffiti. Because I model 2015, that’s at least 2 years after the last build dates on all the cars I have (42) so I need to do the graffiti. Believe it or not, if you see one after a rebuild or a cleaning with the graffiti removed they do look very strange.

It is like UP/ARMN with the white on the car is inviting vandals/graffiti artists to work on the car. Because the reporting marks have been moved higher on the car that tells me UP/ARMN is giving up on cleaning them in the future. There are 3 cold storage facilities in my area that get these cars.Even here in the Midwest of the USA these cars get hit by the vandal/artists. Some though look great, others, not so much…

Paraphasing a You Tube model train graffiti artist, just start…Not all graffiti artists are any good. Your crummy graffiti has a prototype somewhere. Your imitating art.

4 cars with the same number now have wheels and trucks weathered up…

Because of the weather today, the guy coming to look at the bins couldn’t make it. Thanks for the selling price advice

He’s right

I hope he appreciates you work, If I had the cash, I'd happily be in the $300 range, but I am a bit bias'd :D

I am working on a total of 7-25,000gallon tank cars. Walthers Mainline with nice details but not too many and not nearly as fragile as the Tangent and Exactrails I have done in the past.

Working on the wheelsets and trucks for the final 4 tank cars. 3 Clients have approved these, going out as 2 , 1 and 1.

These cars are not due to the clients until March but I had the cars and I am finishing up the 3-green DNAX and 3 black NATX cars so I figured why not.

But as an easy change up I pulled another duplicate number #111029 ARMN reefer from inventory. SMUDGE617 wrote a comment the other about not doing these cars with graffiti. I will try it, as if I change my mind, I can graffiti and tag later.

So the trucks are off, I have taped off the reporting marks and number. Because the final 4 tank cars are going to have the bottom side grimed up, so will this reefer. I will lightly fade this reefer. Basically to get the new plastic shine off it. The prototype was repainted and the reporting marks and numbers moved up out of the way of taggers and the graffiti artists/vandals in 2013. It joined the UP/ARMN fleet after being built in 2005. So if you model modern after 2013 this one is for you or me!

I model pre graffiti or post repaint. They all were clean at some point.😇
Thanks Tom. Sometimes I may write like I am a rivet counter but far from the truth. But I do like the cars on the layout to be representative of what they would be in 2015. Almost every picture I have found online and dated after the 2013 repaint when they moved the reporting marks and numbers up, have the graffiti.

If this car doesn’t sell (I doubt it will) it will still fit in, because “they made it like that”. I am sure someone who comes to my layout will want to say something but they won’t.
