Some things I am working on
IMG_0377.jpeg

6 cars above for a friend
IMG_0371.jpeg

1st 3 cars from the right were done basically the same. The friend just wanted some fading no rust
IMG_0374.jpeg

The 4th car from the right he wanted clean but wanted the new car sheen gone. After a matter of clear cote I just did a very light fading
IMG_0375.jpeg
Cars 5 and 6 from the right are medium faded but then a dark earth color was added. Both roofs have the start of streaking rust but no pockets of noticeable rust

Tonight these should get a final matte clear finish sprayed on

Last week I showed a Coil car for the Eagle River and Kankakee Railroad. Client liked the pictures and approved. Yesterday he returned 1 of the. 2 coil covers and said rust it.

I have a few car photos I will be sending to Marlin39 this evening after dinner.

Continental Grain Company covered hopper is approved pending wheel cleaning and pictures after the final matte clear coat is applied

The car was inspected, cleaned and a matte clear was sprayed. XF-86 flat clear from Tamiya was used. Sprayed at 16PSI.

Here it is after inspection

IMG_6516.jpeg

A deep fade was applied using Tamiya xf-2 flat white and Xf-12 JN Grey and for the thinner I used the 70% concentration of Isopropyl Alcohol ( I was out of the 91%) at 30% paint to thinner. I sprayed the fade at 25psi

Since I liked it, I sprayed another clear matte finish as described above.

Wheel faces are Vallejo Panzer Aces Burnt Umber. Trucks are Vallejo Air Burnt umber and Panzer Aces light rust. Hand brushed on

Body of the car was sprayed using Vallejo Air Burnt umber and thinned 50% using water. I rarely spray Vallejo Air preferring to use it as a wash. BUT, I wanted the grime up against the ribs on the car and the color was right so I sprayed it. The PSi was set at 28. I let that dry and took a q-tip/cotton swab, dipped it in the now available 91% concentration of Isopropyl Alcohol and ran it between the ribs trying not to touch the ribs removing the the sprayed on Vallejo Air burnt umber. Easier than it sounds and very quick. The car was then sprayed with the matte clear and set aside to dry.

Final side colors were Vallejo Air, black, burnt umber and gray mixed as washes and applied. Probably a 50/50 mix of paint to water.

I liked the car but even better after David (Marlin39) offered some suggestions he liked the car.

Publicity shot!

Maynard just fell over laughing when Willard asked him if he knew why people add weathering to these cars.

I will show the Cooperative Marketing car in another post. It is under going additional weathering to one of its too clean end panels

Tom

I was about to comment that Maynard was so impressed by your weathering he had to lay down for a bit to let his admiration euphoria clear.

I did make some changes to the 1st 4 cars from the right. Added a spray of grime. Not sure the 4th car will get approved from the right as it dried much lighter than the other 3 but I like the weathering contrast from the others
IMG_0443.jpeg

Tonight I will add a touch of thinned black to all the wheel faces. They have too new a rusted look to them

How they looked yesterday
IMG_0444.jpeg

I have 2 more grain hoppers for Dave to finish up and I’m close (like just an hour or 2). I have 1 well car that needs 3 custom graffiti pieces and I’m not close.

I have No other freight cars until June for commission work, just diesels

So, I will be moving over to CambriaArea51’s locomotive continuous weathering thread and mostly posting there until the end of June.

I will finish up Marlin39’s cars and post them here. If I find time while we are home and if I work on my own stuff I will post that here.

The month of May will be hit or miss. Between days on Maui at my brother’s place, Terry and I will be in Pasadena for our niece’s wedding. If anyone wants anything from the Original Whistle Stop in Pasadena let me know. There are no LHS’s on Maui and I am not taking anything to weather this time.

Some of you may remember that in 2018 is when I started selling weathered freight cars. My first cars were pulp cars and gondolas with and without loads.

I have not done a pulp car in years. I started one yesterday morning and except for a final clear coat finished it dinner. It was fun and quick. 100% with the air brush
IMG_0539.jpeg

I have been working, admittedly slowly on Marlin39 5 covered hoppers. I sent pictures via email for his thoughts as I do for all commission work on a ATSF hopper. He wanted it weathered but not heavy. Well we all know I like heavy weathering and have an internal fight to keep cars lightly weathered but I did well on this guy. No rust except around the outside cage at the discharge chute and not obvious. Thanks David!

a car I have showed the sides on before but I had not worked on the roof. David wanted a heavier weather look on the roof

IMG_0536.jpeg

So After 1st doing the sides, normal for me I did the roof. I loved the roof let it dry and then saw I ruined the sides. I rarely have over run from heavy grime, mold and rust from the top of the car and since I did not clear coat the side panels ( always do that please) I had to strip off a nice grime finish on the side panels.

Here’s what’s left to do, the sides
IMG_0524.jpeg
I appreciate Marlin39 letting me show his cars, most of my clients but especially my diesel clients do not

Lesson learned. Always clear coat the job if you like it but especially if your client has approved it. This human thing is a tough gig…

Hi. I am not doing much weathering but did assemble 5 loads of pulp to fit into the Walthers pulp cars. I use a styrofoam spacers between the edge logs. I previously would do complete logs but the cars were too heavy so it’s a compromise

Some trimming of the over flowing white glue is needed and these 5 will ship out to Ohio.

Going to Ontario, Canada are 31 of theses scrap yard piles. An old college buddy. Some are longer and a couple are higher but it’s the same build principle. Lots of Vallejo rust colors, blacks, grays and some yellows.
IMG_0598.jpeg
IMG_0599.jpeg
The bases are on a 3” square of styrene. The biggest I did was 3x8. He will trim the bases to fit his scenes. The client supplied the scrap metal shavings

Fun quick projects

All weathering was with Vallejo paints thinned with water and brushed on. Holding them together is a Elmers Glue-All mixture thinned with water

I am sort of frustrated with a couple test lazer samples for structure walls for a paper mill I am working on for a friend’s layout.

So let’s weather!

IMG_0610.jpeg

This is what I mean by fill in. I have another 30 40’ containers and 18 45’ containers of my own inventory to weather. But these 2 pictures are off the shelf of a client that has a dollar amount he does not want to exceed every month. I have his May equipment packaged, this maybe June or July.

These have been inspected and cleaned. A few mud flaps have been glued back on. I will hit all these (chassis included) with a flat clear that I added 3 drops of grey to

IMG_0609.jpeg

Nothing yet to show on the intermodal models. They are clear coated and are dry. The client texted last night to do 10 of the containers heavy and he picked the ones to do and sent good pictures

The chassis will be done as I usually do them. A mix of dark earth for some and a blackish mixture for some. Just overspray them covering everything. Let them dry for a few hours and then blast them with isopropyl alcohol with the PSI set at 50

Intermodal containers also known as future train rooms!

Here is 1 of the 3 40’ OOCL containers I will be working on

Just inspected and cleaned with warm H2O and some dish soap
IMG_0666.jpeg

Next I hit the container with a spray of 91% Isopropyl Alcohol
IMG_0667.jpeg

I have been searching for online photos of containers that have some noticeable weathering. Most containers are in good shape and relativity clean. This photo is from the Alamy site that has free pictures. There are some touches of rust. I am going to try to closely follow this inspirational picture
IMG_0665.jpeg

Here you go
IMG_0669.jpeg

Another spray of clear coat to be added and contemplating adding some earth color to it especially for the bottom edge of the container

later!

The client asked for more grime and weathering on the side panels. I did these and am waiting for response. Because I sealed the finish on the previous pictures I can easily return to them if the client has other wishes

They look good. As many intermodal trains I see they are mostly clean looking. But that what he wants.
Thank you. I took a couple more OOCL containers from my inventory and did them similar to this
IMG_0669.jpeg

I had a lot of nice comments on this one on my FB page so I did 2 more for me! I took the pictures on my phone and since I do not use the iCloud for pictures I will have to air drop them to my IPadPro and I have not done that yet. Sorry. They are similar and I did not do the additional grime.

I was surprised by the client request but he approved these

last night. He wanted him this way and with the color I used.

The Yang Ming were up next. The 40’ is for me and not faded yet. I put it there to show the fade to the client. There are 2 of these 45’ containers to be weathered. I am using the picture to go by. I now have permission for the next 17 containers to free wheel and surprise the client when he unpackages them. They will be mostly like the prototype pictures I have. They will be faded, some gathering rust and dirt but nothing too extreme

Looking good! I think the ones with less grime buildup are the best.
