Spent about 4 hrs. yesterday weathering most of my box cars & 2 cranes & 1 engine. I'll post about a dozen photo's, but I did 25 boxcars & have about 10 to go. Then I've got about 80 other pieces of equipment to do.
I started out w/acryllic paints in a wash, but, that didn't work the way I wanted, so, I used some rust powders that I got from a friend. These really worked a lot better than I thought they would. Lot of tedious work & I looked like a coal miner when I got done.
Larry, some nice work there. That UP high cube came out the best, with a good combination of rust and road grime. Some of the others are little too heavy on thick rust but you'll get it as you keep practicing.
I'd recommend buying a book, such as "Weathering" by Tom Mann, or Pelle Soeburg's book from Kalmach, or even flipping through old Model Railroader's and RMC's, for the weathering articles. then trying it out on a cheap item. The best way to "learn" is trial and error + practice.
