As mentioned in my Gordon Trucking thread, I have been working on a couple Watkins Motor Lines trailers as well. Ive only got the trailers decaled so far, and parts are on their way to finish these ones off as well. I ordered a Ford Aeromax truck to decal for Watkins Motor Lines that will be used with these 2 trailers I figure I can have the truck hooked up to the 28'er and make it look as if the driver is switching trailers at a building dock with the 48'er...
Here are the pictures of the 28' pup trailer. The Mack CH 603 that is hooked up to the trailer is only a temporary placement, I needed a truck to hook up to the trailer for the pictures because I cut the trailers landing gear to represent the "up" position for a trailer that is on the road instead of the molded "down" position that would be seen when the trailer is dropped at a dock.
1. Add Mud Flaps and paint white
2. Paint red lights on rear of trailer
3. Paint wheels white
4. Apply Flat Finish to seal it all in place
48' Trailer
1. Paint Wheels and Mud Flaps White
2. Paint red lights on rear of trailer
3. Add Safety Striping to rear bumper
4. Remove old Landing Gear and replace with a new set
5. Apply Flat Finish to seal it all in place
Ford Aeromax
1. Paint Frame and Bands on Fuel Tank Red
2. Paint Fuel Tank and Grill Silver
3. Paint Mud Flaps White
4. Replace Wheels with new Disc Wheels
5. Paint Wheels Silver
6. Apply Watkins Motor Lines Decals
7. Apply Flat Finish to seal it all in place
Josh,
Who makes the pup trailer and those decals? I'm not sure it is as nice as the other trailers in the other post or even the 48'. Nice job on these - what paint did you use for the silver (did I ask that before).
the pup trailer is an A-LINE kit. It looks a little odd right now because there are no mud flaps on the rear end, so it looks like it is missing something, which it is LOL
The decals are from Microscale
The 48' is a Promotex trailer that came pre-painted with safety stripping and painted bottom rail
The silver paint is from a can of spray paint, Rustoleum "Aluminum"
And thanks for the compliments, trailers are all far from done, but getting there
I have a collection of trailers I'm getting that I'm going to need to start to detail is why I ask so many questions. I'm building a modular intermodal yard and a module that goes next to it that is all trucks. Anyway, I'm building a fleet as you are and always looking for info. BTW: Why do you want to replace the tractor on some of the trailers you posted?
Dave

ahhh I see, that sounds like a cool module set-up! And no worries, feel free to ask all the questions you want
the reason im replacing the cabs is because Im going to be detailing and decaling cabs to match real trucks that the company has in real life. For instance, from all the photos I have looked at for Watkins Motor Lines, I havnt seen any pics with a Mack CH 603 Day Cab or any pics with a Peterbilt. For these set of Watkins trailers, Ill be detailing and decaling a Promotex Ford Aeromax because I saw a photo of a real Watkins Ford Aeromax and liked it....
Ill be doing the same for the Old Dominion trailer. That cab will be a Single Drive Mack CH 603 Day Cab. The cabs hooked up to the Watkins trailers above were just temporary sub-ins to use for the pictures that I just had sitting out next to me on my workbench lol
Cool - I like to see prototypical looking models myself oe as much as you can. I placed an order with Scale Models by Dennis so I'm looking forward to seeing how those look. Have you ever got any of his models before?

Ohh yeah okay now I know who it is, Dennis Aust Models. Ive wanted to order a few resin cab kits and parts from him for a while now but havnt gotten around to it yet lol
Dennis Aust parts are some of the nicest castings you'll find in HO scale. I made extensive use of his parts on a Peterbilt I did a couple years ago. I haven't built one of the Kenworth cab kits, but I've used a sampling of just about everything else including wheels/tires, headache racks, fuel tanks, suspension, fifth wheels, you name it. I think you'll be very happy with his stuff.
THat's great to hear. So often you purchase from some new place only to find the craftmanship is not well at all. I have no problem buying something if it's of good quality.
Dave
I assure you that won't be a problem with Dennis Aust!
The one thing you'll have to watch out for are the wheel/tire combos that use Trucks N Stuff tires. Those tires typically have some flash that needs to be removed. I like to trim the flash with a brand new razor blade, then sand the tires lightly with 320 grit paper to rough them just a bit on the treads. The tires that are his own castings, like the super singles, are excellent.
I didn't mean to hijack your thread, Josh. You have the makings of a mean set of Rocky Mountain doubles.
I have a question: why is the axle of the pup set forward so much? Will the trailer have a lift gate? Or is this a spotting feature of the prototype? I have to admit, I'm not up to speed on Watkins trailers or very much past the 1980s when it comes to trailers.

Hey no worries, your not hi-jacking this thread, talking trucks and parts is welcome here
To answer your question, I am not exactly sure, I just built it to the standard A-LINE kit. I was thinking the same thing when assembling it, it is pushed quite a bit forward. I think it wont look as weird when I get the mudflaps on there, but we will just have to see lol. I ordered 4 more of these smooth wall pups, and 4 of the ribbed wall pups to do up some more trailers as well
