Had some issues at home so decided to visit a good friend in NC (Jerome AKA Wheeler 1963), Did some railfanning in the nice 80 degree temps and had and awesome time. Here are some pics and the rest can be found here, http://s634.photobucket.com/albums/uu61/mgwsy1990/NC 10 2010/

Cool pics mark. I looked thru your gallery. You weren't kidding about a 11 hour drive turning into 2 days. You went everywhere. lol

That is a nice collection of photos Mark! I like the older power and derelict pictures the best.

ACWR is the shortline I grew up watching and taking pictures of. I work for NS out of Linwood NC. Shoot me a message when you come back through, I'll take ya through the yard.

Got to go to Linwood Yard years ago as a kid. Id love to see it again as an adult. Luckily I only live 45 min away...

Next time you're there, you also need to head south on I-85 down to Spencer,NC. They've turned the old SRR shops there into the NC Transportation Museum. Great place to visit.

I took my boys for a ride on the Piedmont today from Charlotte to Kannapolis. P42 was pulling the train, but its usually a GP40 or a F59phi. (It was the usual F59 on the way home). The GP40 was totalled in a grade crossing accident about 6 months ago. Unfortunate as that is, the conductor said today that the NCDOT may donate it to the Spencer Museum. They also have a FP40PH of Amtrak's awaiting restoration out by the turntable in Spencer.

That sounds neat and I would love to see the F59phi's, Never saw one of those.

It wasn't there last summer when we visited.

One of the museum workers told me that when they have a diesel with a problem related to the internal workings of the diesel loco, they send it off to someplace in Pa. (Sorry I can't remember the place name, it's been almost 4 years.) It could be there now. It's the same place they were sending the SRR FP-7 to have its diesel engine and electrical components rebuilt at that time.

I also will be the first to say that the museum may not do this anymore, but this info was factual at the time. I think that it would be really great if they could do this stuff on premises, like they do with the steamers they're rebuilding.
