Videos: Nevada Northern 2-8-0 #93

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. I finally got the videos from my Nevada trip off my camcorder and posted on YouTube. These are all shots of #93, a 2-8-0, running light out of Ely, NV. The first clip was shot at the west end of the tunnel near Ely. The sound of the chuffs coming through the tunnel ahead of the engine, is just plain awesome!

Ray, those were some beautiful shots, especially the last, with the camera right down on the grade. There's just nothing like the sound of a steam engine and whistle, even that of what I used to think of as a lowly Consolidation.

I visited the NN many times in the late 60's and early 70's and thought it would run forever. Like most mining operations, it turned out not to be true. It appears there's hope the old NN may still come back to life. Sierra Pacific Power purchased the whole right of way from Ely to Cobre in 2007 with the intent of building a 2500 megawatt coal fired plant outside of Ely. The line would be used to transport about ten train loads of coal a week and provide about 250 jobs in the Ely area. With the current administration's position on coal, the project has been put on hold again, but at least the tracks are still in place with no immediate danger of them being ripped up.
