o.k. Guys,i have attempted to put your advises to work. I did the cotton belt box with a dusting of a 30% brown and 70% thinner. Then proceeded with my normal stuff. The gilford box is a work in progress. This one i did some rust spotting let set for 5 min's or so and then used thinner to drag it down. Still need to dust and detail. The santa fe is my next work. I will keep a photo log of the build up. Thank guys

For your more heavy weathering projects, very lightly rub a pencil eraser across the lettering. This should, if done right, create the appearance of faded lettering. If done wrong, you will have no lettering, though, so be careful if you do try this!

I really like the Cotton Belt box, I need to start practicing weathering techniques, thats one thing I never put much energy into. Nice work!

Quick question, I always wondered about a new, clean eraser to remove road names off of brand new N Scale locomotives, do you think one could remove lettering like this or is this common knowledge that I missed out on ?

MM, the Cotton Belt box car came out fine. The only thing I'm confused about is the blue trucks. The B&M car is a bit too splotchy. I'd use a little more thinner and blend all the rust together.

Blacksheep, a normal penicl eraser probably won't remove lettering, especially if it's pad printed. You can try a clean brite boy and rub lightly to see what happens. If the letering is painted on, it might do the trick, but go slow, or you'll remove the underlying paint as well.

It probably could, though it may erase some of the paint as well. Never actually tried it myself but heard that people do use this technique. I believe one of the more recent issues of MR had something on it.
