Hello all. I'm new to the model railroad hobby and I have a question about the blueline BLI-5080 UP Big Boy 4-8-8-4, 4004, 1941, after cooler, DC Sound/DCC Ready, HO. Please see link below. The price is $427 and it looks like a really nice model but is this price reasonable? I really like the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 and I'm looking for it in HO scale but I want a really detailed and accurate model.

I also found this link but the price is much cheaper and I don't know why that is.

Darn, and I was going to say, FTD has them CHEAP... They're sold out...

PCM will sell them for the MSRP on their own site... You might want to check the following, as they're marked by BLI/PCM as a super store (meaning they get them even cheaper).
Niagara Hobby & Craft Mart, New York
Train World / Train Land, New York
Warrick Custom Hobbies, Florida
St. Aubin's, Nevada & Illinois

Oh, on the subject of the PCM Big Boy, I've got no first hand experience with the steam yet, Rex owns a PCM Y6b, maybe he can share his experience?

Thanks for the link. Yeah looks like they are sold out. I see that one doesn't have sound or DCC and hence the price differance. Quite a bit more for sound and DCC.

Yeah, it comes with sound, but no DCC, so you'd need a $20 decoder to make it run on DCC... Sorry if I worded that wrong.

i came home & my son had it out of the box & on the layout & took photos but they are still on his memory card so in the morning you alll shall have your precious pictures {in my most evil laugh] muuuuuuuuaaaahhhhhhhhhh :D

Very nice piece of kit. Should pull the paint off the walls. :D Thanks for indulging me.

My PCM and BLI are top notch as far as I'm concerned. I don't have any brass and have no expectations of them looking as good as one. But aside from my Y6b these ROCK when it comes to pulling power. My PCM now has a Tsunami in it and I love it.

the only thing i have a tsunami in is my turbine but i wanna get a tsunami for my 2-8-8-2 & is the tsunami worth replacing the locsound in the pcm big boys ?? or i mistaken & they already have tsunami ?? the only thing is at 100 bucks on avg for a tsunami its a little steep + speakers ,but they are the best

It all depends on the person. I got a great deal on my PCM so the tsunami was a logical upgrade. For the time, the PCM's sound was good. As with everything else it will be replaced by something better sooner or later. As far as best? That is a Ford vs Chevy argument. I use them because I have them in other loco's. It's really interesting MU'ing a big boy and a 80mac. Really gets the rivet counters going. I have Conrail 90macs with Tsunami's that always gets comments at open house.

Hi, The PCM Big Boy that I have is factory fitted with a Loksound V3.5 sound decoder.
According to the PCM documentation the loco will work on NMRA-DCC and also the Marklin Motorola system ! Why I don't know unless the loco can be converted for 3-rail stud contact operation.
Hope this helps.
Colin.
