Is there a company or individual that will make custom castings, either in a polymer or metal, (I remember Cary Locomotive works used to make metal castings of different engines)?
I am interested in modeling a few Fairbanks-Morse H20-44's. Since it is very unlikely that any of the model engine manufacturers will produce this model, I am trying to find other alternatives.
The only casting I've done is using resin. I really like the casting products from Bare Metal Foil. You could build masters of the sides of the engine and cast them out of resin. I've been able to make resin casting less then 1/8" thick, so locomotive sides are doable.
Talk to Kaslo. If you & they can drum up enough interest in it, they'll make it. I think they need a minimum of 50.

Thanks for the suggestion. (Who is Kaslo)? I would think there are more than a few people interested in the AC&Y and the P&WV (not too mention the Pennsy, NYC and UP) that would potentially be interested in an H20-44. How do I get in touch with Kaslo?
How similar is it to the h10-44 and h12-44? Cary definitely made them and they can be found on eBay or through Bowser (
see link). eBay is definitely the cheaper way to do it if you're patient.

You may have to wait a long time for Kaslo to produce anything for you. They seem to be very far behind . I have been waiting 2 years now for them to re-issue the MLW RS23s that were supposed to be ready in 2006. They seem to have a way too much on the bench right now. Better to try and make your own as I am doing.

Although I am certainly no expert, it would appear that they are a cross between an H10-44/H12-44 and an H16-44. Kind of like an H16-44 with the cab moved to the end like an H10-44. They also are approximately 3 feet longer than an H16-44 (early version).
I suspect that this will be my starting point.
