Under Construction - Birmingham UK

I Am a big fan of Multiple Units. Mostly ignored by modellers but they are the heart of the railway. What follows are a few pictures of some of mine.

Hi Jos

Is museum railways the same as preserved railways or is it part of the national system? The Yellow and grey livery is what I am more familiar with. Didn't someone like ROCO do one in HO?

Jim

The one on the picture is the last one overhere...the picture is showing the engine during the late nineteeneighties as it was already part of the MBS , I think ,and therefore of course in yellow - grey.livery....some years later he was painted back in his original livery.

pfffiew, I realy don't know... but I know defenitly that it is NOT part of the national system!
I think we/ you could/may call it a "Museum railway"...I think we don't have "preserved railways overhere!=(

Hi Jos

Sorry I should be a bit clearer

By preserved railway I mean one run by volunteers (usually) using old restored steam and deisel locomotives and stock. They normally only operate for the tourist industry and usually use old, closed branch lines to run their trains on.

Perhaps Britain's most well know is the Severn Valley Railway of which you can find out more from here

Nice work Jim, you have to love the old DMU's, much better than any of the new stuff of today in my opinion.

Ahh now I understand.. in that case...we only have preserved railways!!
Just some miles from me we have the ZLSM a small museumrailway , only 30 miles of track...but with a beautiful Swedish steam engine!( S 2)

Hi Steve

Oh I dunno. The Class 350 EMU's are very nice to look at.

I have got the unit section of my site started. To see more have a look at

http://jsmithwright.demonweb.co.uk/stock/units/units.html

I have also uploaded a few pictures of a small diorama I did at

One of the images is reproduced below

Thanks Josh

I tried to think of something you cant really do on a normal layout. Pretty pleased with how it came out - should use it more really.

Hi All

It is only recently that we have got high quality models with central motors, all wheel drive, all wheel pick up that sort of thing. However there are still gaps which meand we have to resort to pretty drastic surgery like this…

I am currently running a tutorial on how this is done on RMweb - a british forum. You dont need to be a member to view posts so perhaps you might like to take a look?

HI All

What follows is probably the most pointless bit of modelling you will ever see!! Why?

1 - I dont know what the real thing looks like so its a pure guess - its probably nothing like this.
2 - It doesnt even face the public and the whole building will be behind a retaining wall!
3 - the windows are not that open
4 - there is a palisade fence in the way so the operators wont be able to see it either!!

But - its a bit of an experiment to see if a hint of interior detail is all you need. If it doesnt work it wont matter. The "light" room will be lit - hence the lighter colours and slightly lower walls allowing for a second ceiling.

Signal Box - small building in progress

Cheers

Hi All

Picked up the microstrip I needed on Sunday at the Nottingham show so that meant I could get on with the window frames. Looking more like a building now. Little chap for scale.

Sticking with signal boxes.

Got the cladding on now, just need to sort out the corners then its on to roof details (air con unit in pic is just plonked on ATM as is the upper section)

SBlowerbuilding3.jpg

Had a first lick of paint with ground white pepper blown across it while still wet to give a concrete texture. Plain white to follow. Also painted the window frames black

For the first time I am able to get an overall idea of how the whole signal box complex will look. Started to replace the cladding on the main building too, much happier with the evergreen sections than the resin castings I did.

Cheers

Jim
