I have many 1970's Tyco rolling stock and I would like to convert their truck mounted couplers to chassis mounted ones. Anyone have any pics of conversions that you've done? Thanx
Not exactly a '70s vintage, but I picked up a Tyco tank car, that big, long Exxon one at a train show for a couple bucks. I replaced the trucks with something more contemporary and suitable, then basically drilled a new hole on the center sill to direct screw a coupler on. Doesn't look the best; I probably should have used a #78 coupler and box set, but hey, this car is a cheap-o and I want to use shelf couplers.....
The car is downstairs somewhere, I'll try to find it and take a pic....

Here is a 1960's Tyco former Trailer flat car that I have mounted Kadee "scale" couplers to the frame along with Kadee Archbar trucks. I used Testers cement (the liquid type that disolves the styrine) to assemble the draft gear box and to attach to the frame. I then used spacers (small fiber washers of different thicknesses, by Kadee) if needed on the bolster (where truck mounts to frame) to get the correct coupler hight. Depending on the type of car, I will either use the bolster spacers or styrine spacers between the draft gear box and the car frame. Most of my rolling stock is older Tyco, Bachmann, Rivorrosi and Athern that I upgrade with Kadee.
I have two Mantua flatcars from that period. One has Kadee couplers mounted in the truck mounted coupler pockets and the other has Kadee couplers mounted in body mounted Kadee draft gear boxes. Here are photos of each.
Jeffrey, that body mounted coupler need to have the striking plates aligned so they match up. You may have already noticed and fixed the problem but the truck is going to hung up on that misaligned upper plate.
Actually it's never caused a problem. I didn't even notice it until I saw the photo. Here I've been running it on 18" radius without any problem whatever.
