When I was very young, one of my 1st hobbies was model railroading. I recently dug my mid-1980's (I'm 31) mish-mash of model railroading gear out of my parents house and need some opinions on either preserving these pieces or using them in my childs model railroading.
1. Is the box valuable or just taking up space? I have the original U.P. engine and accessories.
2. There also is a 1776-1976 Bicentennial engine and caboose.
How can I judge any collector's value? I'm very attached to these items. Are these "shooters" or "safe queens"

. Any Input helpfull for someone who's passion for trains has been reignited. Tks.

20nickels, welcome to the forums and back to model trains. Once you've been bitten by the bug, you usually come back

What you have there is a lower end train set. It might be worth it if it has any sentimental value to you. That brass track and Tyco transformer need to go straight in the trash. You'd spend most of your time cleaning that track and that type of transformer tends to heat up real fast. If your saving it for your child's first train set, then that's not bad. It can take a beating and you wouldn't have to worry about damaging anything that is expensive. Just my 2 cents worth.
And it has space-age circuitry!!!!!! lol
Unless the box was in pristine condition along with everything inside it, and you intended to either collect or try to sell to a collector, then the box is just taking up space in my opinion.
Collector value on thsi set would not be very much anyway, except in special circumstances.
Welcome back to the hobby, Just like "Hotel California", you can check out, but you can't ever leave!
That set, along with some other themed sets, is Bachman's entry level grade. A bit better than toys, but not by much. Worth keeping around for the kids. One similar went on eBay for $13 plus shipping a few days ago. And that may have been over priced.
Keep it, sell it, or put it back in the closet. It doesn't eat much.

Tks for all the replies.
From memory the space age circuitry doesn't work so hot. Kept having to polish the tracks. As to the value, I guess you don't know till ya ask. Will be lurking here periodically as my boy grows up. Tks again.
