Tinplate or Hi-rail? Yes!

After clearing up more debris, some trimming here and there to get a fairly uniform width, and sanding down to the base board, we are left with a nice one and 5/8" wide space between the ballast shoulders, ready for new roadbed...

...add some fresh ballast, a smattering of ground foam "weeds", and it's done!

1 down, 8 more to go. The next 4 are curves!

Excellent work, Chuck. Makes me wish I had the space for S scale. You can really do some nice detailing in the larger scales.

Thanks for the kind words, folks!

Work continues...

The 1st corner is completed except for ballast. I've decided to lay all the new track and test it for operation from now on b4 applying ballast and other finishing touches.

The change to solid rail from the hollow Gargraves rail is more noticeable than it was with the 1st (May Co) section of ASG track. That section was newly built during the rush to get ready for the NTS. By changing a section from hollow-rail GG to solid-rail ASG, the full contrast between the two is more evident. The whole feel of the section is different; more model-railroady.

I like it.:)

Well, the new ASG track has been installed (tho' not ballasted) since mid-November '08. It's amazing how you can get on a good roll only to stop abruptly due to extenuating circumstances (aka: life).

But the track has been tested for fit, so ballasting can begin section by section. The test went well. Only slight tweaking of the rail connector length was needed on 2 or 3 sections out of the 10. Of course, the test fit had to be thoroughly checked, which meant running some allegedly finicky steam power around the route. Jim obliged by bringing over a few from his fleet, like the Flyonel Mikado below.

Look at that lead wheel. Can you say "pie-cutter flanges"?

Glad to see you're still at it, Chuck. That's actually a pretty nice looking engine but those pilot wheels would have to go...:)

Oh yeah, "at it" is what I am. That pic is from last month. Part of the layout is still set up; a small enough course that the garage door can be lowered. Hafta keep it shut with all the rain we've been getting lately.

Here's another from January, Jim's ATSF Northern blasting through the S under clear skies...

Chuck, looking good. Yeah Lionel has regressed back to the pizza cutter flanges. It really isn't needed on the AF equipment but they did it anyway. I sure would like to see some scale wheels offered for that engine.

Greg

Wooooooo-EEE!

What's it been, now... 14 months... or so?

Many, many things have occurred since the last layout update. Many delays, many "incidents", losses, issues... much "stuff".

But layout work has resumed, finally. After a year of "testing" newly installed ASG track (playing with trains, actually), mainline ballast repair is again underway. Only one straight section left to do, then 5 corners. Then we begin work on street lights, building lights, signaling... flashy things! By the end of Summer 2010, the system should be ready for another show.

A couple snaps of the repaired farm section are in order...

Ahem...

Yeah, it's been awhile. That "life" thing again. BUT...

2012 will see (if all goes according to plan), yet another display of the C+D System, in public, even!

We are slated to take part in "Railroad Days 2012" this May 5th and 6th at Fullerton Amtrak Station in Old Town Fullerton, So. Cal. This year marks the return of "Railroad Days" to the Santa Fe (Amtrak) station after an absence of a few years. It is also the first time the C+D System will be displayed at "Railroad Days".

Are we excited? A little. ;) We are in "panic rush mode" to get more work done on the system, me having finally broken out of "procrastination mode".

So, anybody planning to be in So. Cal. the 1st weekend in May? If so, you now have something hard-core railfan-ish to do! There will be many layouts there, as well as some 1/1 scale RR stock. Admission is free!!

Hope to see you there!

Nice to hear from you again Chuck, welcome back. Hope there will be more pictures from the May display. Good luck with the show
Cheers

Ho-kayyyyyy...

Railroad Days 2012 has come and gone... or maybe we should say "arrived and departed". I can safely claim that it was the most intense, fastest-paced, exhausting show the C+D System has ever attended.

It was also a ton of fun! :D

Pix will be posted as they are edited. I hope they don't disappoint, but there was very little time to point and shoot, much less compose shots. The crowd action was literally non-stop. We're still catching our breath!

Pictures of kids and trains are never dissapointing, bring them on when you're ready

Cheers
Willis

The calm before the (next day's) storm...

Actually, these pix were grabbed after the 1st day's running. The side curtains of the tent had been lowered
and we were just leaving.

Jim couldn't be with us this time, so a couple of his buildings are missing; most notably his fire station.

The blue C+D Towers were rebuilt into the building at the far left of the 2nd pic.

Well, I was going to try to find some kind of logical order to this latest sequence of photos, but there ain't any! So, I'll just post 'em as I took 'em.

Please keep in mind these were shot while simultaneously keeping Louie the Loader supplied with barrels.

This shows what was about the average crowd density under the tent we helped occupy. There were some outstanding layouts there, so it wasn't only to get out of the hot sun that people crowded into the shade...
