This is a thread about Bruette's Goofy Railroad.
Which is a part of my attic/playpen. And the basement is now the home of my permanent Christmas layout. The sound systems are a part of what makes it all goofy 🤪

The truth is I have been keeping busy with what i can do. Since the surgeries I have been restricted to light duty, but this won't last forever! I'll be hauling up the lumber for the bench work soon enough. Once that is done things will get really goofy! :D

My attic sound system is finally complete, and I couldn’t be happier with it. Dolby sounds amazing for watching baseball games, though I haven’t tried a movie yet. I tested my DVD/VCR with a Frosty the Snowman VHS tape, and it sounded great. For music, I prefer true stereo with all effects turned off. With the Cerwin Vega speaker, I don’t see the need for a subwoofer—though I might feel differently after watching a movie.
Yes, you area exactly right. For music the subwoofer should be silent, low frequencies in music is the job for the normal woofers. This is because music doesn't really have any normal "sub" sounds in it. If one hears anything from a subwoofer when playing music, it is set on too high a frequency. Sub should not kick in until under 40Hz. There is usually a switch or knob on the unit somewhere to adjust. To test low frequency speakers for music, I use Emerson Lake and Palmer - Toccata. One should be able to put your hand in front of the woofer or any base port and feel the air pumping.

For a movie to test low frequencies, try "Contact" staring Jodie Foster. It should vibrate things off your shelves. Like an earthquake.

I have a list of movies I use to test specific features of AV sound systems.

I used to laugh at the people who were hooking their DCC sound decoders to external sound systems way back when they didn't produced any sound frequencies beyond what a 1.5" speaker could produce. Thank heavens they've gotten better now, but still always something I look at when choosing a sound decoder. Frequencies produced. Then it is up to me to get the speakers to get the frequency response I want.

I replaced the RCA cables connecting the TV to the Pioneer with an Optical Digital Cable and what a difference it has made! Now music paying through the TV's YouTube app sounds great in Dolby.

I tested the low end with these videos
Cerwin Vega Sl-28 needs no subwoofer at least not for me.

I still have not tried a movie with good sound so that could change.

I got some productive work done in the attic yesterday, finally making progress on the layout side. I’m not setting any firm goals, but I’m a little bit closer to starting the benchwork. I enjoyed it even more listening to MLB.TV in Dolby through the Attic's sound system. I also watched a bit, since I take more breaks than actually work.
