Spacing in a yard

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I'm assuming you're building in N scale, but my spacing is 2" for HO in my yards. I have big fingers and need to fit them in there.

HO is 2" on average. I've heard 1 1/4" for N (just a little wider, for 5 finger switching).

The minimum for N scale is 1". This equates to just over 13', which is the minimum full size railroads use. If yard tracks are on a curve, you will probably need to widen the spacing for clearance.

You may want to lay some track out spaced at 1", put some cars on the track and see if you can see and touch what you need to. If not try, wider spacing.
