I have my first layout almost complete and it works great. But it's to quiet. Is there any type of engine sounds that can be added without going to a DCC system?

Yes, a number of under-the-layout sound systems. I believe that Sountraxx makes at least one such system.

Most all sound equipted engines will operate on DC layouts, though a certain number of sounds will require DCC operation, still the chuff ,bell and whistle on steamers or the rumble of a prime mover and blatting diesel horn should satisfy you at least for awhile til your bitten by that evil DCC bug. :D

or a looped MP3 of a train roll-by. I recorded one years ago directly on the computer. Edited it to give it some variation, made it much longer. and play it back on repeat. Sounds great on a decent stereo, too. Old school but works. and no DCC required.

You are probably correct, it's only a matter of time before I get bored of running only one train at a time and make the jump to DCC.
