I am thinking of building a 2.5' X 5.5' diarama around a grain facility in HO. Where I am living at now (mobile home) I have extremely little space and figure that this would help calm the "itch". My question is what do you think the distance for the thru line should be from the front edge to make it easy to connect to my future (hopefully) layout? I know that there is no real magic distance that will work with any layout but what do you think would be the easiest to work with?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you mean the distance of the mainline track from the front edge of the layout? If so, about four inches in gives you a little space for scenery and should be fine for connecting up to another (eventual) section.

You can run the track closer to the front edge but you'd need a plexiglass shield or fascia extending above the scenery to prevent any nosedives by your rolling stock and / or engines to the floor.
