I need input from a diesel detail freak. I'm in the process of stripping and repainting a pair of P2K SD60's for my modern R.I. I've looked over the details west site. What is recommended? I'm committed to adding the snow plow and ditch lights. I've seen the kits for the GP60 and 40 but I don't see a lot for the SD60.
These P2K SD60's run my home 18" curves beautifully. However, these two heavy pullers are primary going to run at the club. I'm 99% sure I want the Digitrax decoders. What sound setup do I want? I only plan on adding sound to the lead unit but I'm not sure which units to look at.
Thanks.
The P2K SD50/60 series units come with alot of details already on them. I have a pair of SD60's in Norfolk Southern, and they run great with almost any decoder in them. My decoder of choice is a Lenz LE1000W, hardwired to a 8 pin socket, but you have to change the bulbs, or add resistors, or you'll see those bulbs light up just once. For the ditch lights, I'm guessing you want those functional? If so, I'd use the set made for the Athearn Genesis SD70 units. Those are deck mounted and use 1.5volt bulbs in those and will definitely require resistors. Search Ebay for
those and you will find a distributor that sells them real cheap.
So now you need a 4 function decoder and want sound also. Theres not much room at all for a speaker in those units. Proto put alot of weight in those units, hence the great pulling power. You'll have to do some milling to get a speaker in there. If you find another way to put a speaker in there, please show us.
Awesome. I just bought 'em. On the way! Now I can look forward to pulling my hair out some more with other micro details.
I'm almost wondering if I couldn't add the speaker to a trailing car. Most of my "theme" is hauling grain up and down the line. I wonder if I couldn't add the speakers to a mix (covered hopper, box, etc.) of cars with a detachable plug and always use a wired car for the lead. Thoughts?
About the only details I can think of to add is a "cab prime ac", and whatever antennae you want to use. The units have mu hoses, snowplows, coupler cut levers, hand grabs, even fuel tank details.
As for putting the speaker in a trailing car, that would work the best. Just do a little modification to the rear pilot area and put a mini plug for the speaker wires. Maybe disguise it as mu hoses.

Sorry Josh, but the problem with buying from Horizon/Athearn is that it takes forever to get what you order. Also, the price you see there is more, add shipping, than the retailer from ebay including shipping.

Forever? I got my order in 2 days. I ordered on a Sunday, got it Tuesday. I think the reason I liked it more, was that, I killed a bulb right away, called customer support, they sent me a new one completely free. I'll try ordering from that eBay dealer though, cheap is always the better factor, considering I need a 3 dozen or so.
Woha, jasminations? I've bought from them before...
