Is the fun the Toy, Mechanical, Scale, Realism, Collecting, "Brand" loyalty & collection, Technology, Electrical, problem solving, or Some "Blend" that is different for everyone? My hope is everyone finds that place , that blend where they build a place where it's fun for them to be.
Never finished ever evolving. Might start in some flavor end in another. For me it's a blend of "toy" from my youth to interesting enough technology to draw in my grand kids.
O & 027 scale is just to toy like for my interests. 3 rails, unrealistic turn radii, huge couplers and the set about accessories. It certainly attracts the kiddies but that's not my modeling objective.

I happen to like the Lionel "Semi Scale" for esoteric reasons. I appreciate the true model railroading types, it's an art form, a skill to the point of specialized craftsmanship to me. Especially those who live it and then model a section of their world. Since I "Rail fan", realize its a tough thing to get right. Lionel toy trains Harkens back to when I was a pre teen and spending hours after school playing trains in the basement while the snow was piling up outside. Good memories. Also having spent decades with heavy equipment, still have an excavator & farm tractors; I rather understand things bigger than the typical household item. Not going to get real so just want to keep it light and fun. Two things define "win", one is the interaction with my kids and grand kids. Second ( selfish ) is I like making old machines run. Done it with trucks & tractors in the past and now chainsaws for last couple of decades. ( afleetcommand the chainsaw / logging side of my life ) Getting older so crawling around under heavy equipment isn't fun anymore, I really enjoy being in where it's warm to fix on old Lionel and now other brand trains. BUT the point of these things is smiles, and everyone will find their own way.
Yesterdays, "before the snow storm" rail fan after noon. Was actually getting 20 gallons of hydraulic for a tractor was changing the hydraulic filters on. Nasty job. So wasn't hard for me to get "distracted" being retired and all, so did two video's this one and another

Hi Ken,
In a lot of cases, you are correct. But don't totally poo-poo 3-rail O-gauge, it doesn't have to be toy-like. Check out this guy's layout......................
Hey I like the stuff (( Lionel Semi Scale & 027 ), it puts a smile on my face & my grand kids as well. If I want to see "real" I go an hour north or right down town BUT I have been getting piece by piece a couple of Scale MTH trains & Collecting some of the Williams Scale O as well. They have their place. But can't "mix" with the Lionel that gets the bulk of the run time. ( Looking to pick over time from shows and auctions a complete set of MTH Pennsylvania stream liners to match with my GG1 and Williams ALCO PA set. Same with New York Central to build a Scale train to match my NYC Train Master & NYC F3's . But my old collection of 1940's thru 1960's Alco's and 2026's & 1666's get the bulk of the run time )
